“Decent Budget Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

My family of three stayed here over a weekend - room was spacious because we got a corner room. Location is ok if you drive - minutes away from most places a tourist will want to go, plus ample free carpark space at the hotel. We walked to Jonker Street on our first night - about 15 mins' walk. Not so bad because you get to soak in the flavour of the city. Some nice eateries around the corner (must try Bulldog Cafe, an old Peranakan food place) plus 24-hour stores too. Hotel is old and dated. Smells and looks like one. But clean, overall, and service is prompt. Food at cafe is surprisingly pretty good. Incredibly Rock bottom deals on Tues and Thurs - laksa, fried rice and satay are must tries. The cafe is not airconditioned and on our first day, the free wifi (only available at the cafe) didn't work. The lobby was packed in the mornings because of busloads of tourists checking out - I understand that the occupancy rate is very high. Perhaps that is because it is a decent budget hotel - no frills, very basic.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room (think they are bigger), as near as possible to the lift. Corridors are reall...

“Not a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

We stayed in this hotel for few days in Sept 2011. Room is good, Service is Good, Good Staff, Breakfast almost same every day. No too many varieties. There were very few eating places nearby, about in 10 mnts walking distance. Mcdonalds or KFC are not in that area. Little India is nearby. Restaurats in that area are not clean. When I was crossing a road in Little India, two chinese looking boys riding a motor bike targeted and tried to grab my gold chain around the neck . but I pushed them away. This was happened at noon. I am a regular visiter to Malaysia and this is the first time such a thing happened.

“Dusty, muddy, dirty.”

Stayed for 3 days 2 nights. It wasn't a personal choice, i had to follow my mom for a meeting. The bedsheets feels rough and mom complains itchiness. The room was dusty, and you can clearly see the dust in the air! Bathtub is patches of some paint and rust. Food is not good. Overlooking a chinese cemetery. Tv was small and old fashioned, but some astro channels are there, not bad. Service is decent. Oh, hotel parking is a muddy field, with not much lights. And for the price u will pay, i'd say you find somewhere else. It aint worth it!

“Faded Glory”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

You can describe the Emperor Hotel in Melaka (Malacca) very easily: faded glory, tired, past it's best, unkempt, there are so many options.
Sadly the hotel looks like it once may have been a player, now it's a hasbeen only to be called upon when no other player is available, and that's how we ended up there. Normally we would stay at the heart of the action in the magnificent boutique hotel, The Puri Hotel. Surely that is the best value and best positioned hotel in Melaka. However according to trip Advisor there are six better hotels! I am sure that on price and value for money nothing comes close to this characterful gem.
Our next choice would be The Fenix Hotel, more modern, away from Jonkers but by the Malls it's a good price and clean.
But, If you try to book a room in Melaka at a few days notice, well you will struggle, Melaka is very popular right now, as it should be.
It would appear to me that running a hotel in Melaka must be a great business.
Oh, anyway let's get back to our review shall we?
The check in at The Emperor Hotel was quick, easy and polite. And the reception area drips with marble showing what a grand old lady this hotel may have been.
The room was dirty, the carpets should be ripped up and burnt! The furniture was nice thirty years ago and the bed sheets had stains on them. The bathroom is worn out and feels grubby, the shower next to useless, dirty floor tiles with worn out grout.
So, that's the story really. At a pinch it's a place to stay that is OK.
If the owners say 10 - 15 years ago had decided to start a process of continual upgrading it would could have been a gem, but they didn't and it's not.
It's a bit far from the action so you either need a car or you will need to find taxis.
There is parking and a swimming pool though so some plus points.

“Good location, average hotel...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

The hotel has a perfect location with about 10 minutes drive to shopping area and tourist spot. Room is clean and quite huge, but the bathroom is not that clean and looks old. And for some reasons, the hotel lobby and the room has a kind of weird smell, they smell like cigarettes I think, and it's of course unpleasant for non-smokers, so air-freshener is highly recommended. The buffet breakfast is average. Overall, I think the hotel is reasonably acceptable with their cheap price. Recommended for short-stay, but for me, I might want to look for some other hotel on my next trip to Melaka...
