“Brilliant hotel”

Fantastic hotel, the staff are very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is very traditional where you are served at your table so no bun fight at the buffet! Dinner was good but a bit pricey. Rooms are lovely and we had a really comfortable night. We went on the free walking tour of the city in the late afternoon which should have been for a couple of hours. It took us 3hrs as the guide was so informative and we took the boat ride back to the hotel where there is a small jetty. We ended up at a chinese tea shop and sampled numerous types of tea.

“A wonderful building and great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

The Majestic is effectively two buildings, the main building with reception, bar and restaurant, and a more modern building where the guest rooms are. The main building is a fantastic 100 year old former house that belonged to a Chinese businessman, and it really is an outstanding example of architecture from that time. They have restored that building extremely well, and it was a pleasure sitting in it having a drink or food.

The staff at the hotel were excellent. When we arrived the manager came out to have a chat with us, answered our questions about the buildings and the general area, and generally went out of his way to make us feel welcome. We were very touched that having asked us the reason for our stay (it was our honeymoon), he arranged for our room to be made up with flowers on the bed etc. while we were out for the evening - a thoughtful gesture.

The room itself was very pleasant. Completely open plan, with the bathroom (which contained a shower and a huge free-standing bath) open to the main bedroom, with shutters to enclose it when needed. The only downside to the room (and this is why I've given 4 stars and not 5) is that the walls seem to be poorly soundproofed, and you could clearly hear the people in the next room. It wasn't a big problem for us, since the people in the next room weren't especially noisy, but it could be a major drawback to the hotel.

Room Tip: As mentioned in my main review, due to the poor soundproofing, I'd recommend trying to get a roo...

“Relaxing Majestic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This hotel is comfortable and the rooms are really excellent, with attentive staff. But not a good place to eat--especially if you are veggie. Breakfasts are super conventional, a bit of a pain and you'd be better off eating out.

View from rooms is spectacular but a huge hotel being built opposite is going to do bad things for this particular location. Currently (2012 Jan/Feb) noisy as they pile drive and construct the new building.

An impressive mono rail curving around in front of the hote seems frozen in time and never worked while we were there, and locals say its an example of curruption. Pity as it looks like it could have been fun.

Swimming pool rather cramped, squeezed in between the old frontage and the new tower block.

Don'tg miss the high tea.

Room Tip: Room 801 was as good as it gets!

“Comfort with a touch of luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Very friendly staff and a warm welcome. The rooms are fabulous with the best bathtub I've ever encountered. The beds were very comfortable and an excellent location close to the river. Internet access in the room with free wifi in the public rooms. We tried the afternoon tea which was different, but tasty. Only problem was they had run out of cream for the scone, so extra jam was given, which wasn't really a suitable substitue. The breakfast was very good with a good choice of hot dishes to order. Even the beef bacon and chicken sausage were good. The pool area while a little on the small size was adequate to cool down in after a day exploring the attractions. Also free car parking to the side of the hotel.

“Great service, cosy rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the service was top notch and they handled a central aircon breakdown situation well (the whole floor had no air conditioning for at least 4-5 hrs). It was about 9pm at night and the room we were in was stuffy to say the least.

The front desk managed to switch rooms for us (could have been faster...took them close to an hour to move us) and everything worked well in the new room (although the lobby had 2 or 3 disgruntled couples milling around waiting for the air conditioning to be fixed).

The room is cosy enough, love the toilet area, no fancy gadgets though (if that matters to you).

The pool is a good enough size for an afternoon dip and had no more than 2-3 people using it while we were there.

Friendly greetings from all staff everywhere we went.

The complimentary city walking tour is worth the effort. The lady who brought us on the walk was knowledgeable and had many interesting stories to tell. Sheds new light on this historic city. :)
