The Majestic is effectively two buildings, the main building with reception, bar and restaurant, and a more modern building where the guest rooms are. The main building is a fantastic 100 year old former house that belonged to a Chinese businessman, and it really is an outstanding example of architecture from that time. They have restored that building extremely well, and it was a pleasure sitting in it having a drink or food.
The staff at the hotel were excellent. When we arrived the manager came out to have a chat with us, answered our questions about the buildings and the general area, and generally went out of his way to make us feel welcome. We were very touched that having asked us the reason for our stay (it was our honeymoon), he arranged for our room to be made up with flowers on the bed etc. while we were out for the evening - a thoughtful gesture.
The room itself was very pleasant. Completely open plan, with the bathroom (which contained a shower and a huge free-standing bath) open to the main bedroom, with shutters to enclose it when needed. The only downside to the room (and this is why I've given 4 stars and not 5) is that the walls seem to be poorly soundproofed, and you could clearly hear the people in the next room. It wasn't a big problem for us, since the people in the next room weren't especially noisy, but it could be a major drawback to the hotel.
