Stayed here for a night in January 2012.
If the review is based on the facilities and location, I would agree with most of the reviews here. The hotel has all the standard amenities ie towels, tea/coffee making facilities, complimentary bottles of mineral waters etc . However, the rooms are a little cramp and the furniture are dated. Location is good as it is just behind the famous Jonker Walk yet it is very quiet for those who prefer an early sleep. My problem with this hotel is the attitude and the professionalism from the staff or more accurately from a single staff named Lawrence J. I have an email confirming the room type, room tariff and confirmation number. Upon arrival, I was informed by the receptionist that the tariff was more than what was written in the email. I was surprised and asked for clarification. Lawrence J have the audacity to print out the email and pointed out that the room tariff he wrote was for a lower grade of room and that I have to pay more for the room confirmed. I was shocked. Why am I asked to pay for a mistake which was not my fault in the first place. It wasn’t because of the amount of extra money I have to pay. It was the failure of him to acknowledge his mistake and rectifying it. I angrily said, “no, it’s your fault, you deal with it or call your supervisor.” He tossed the paper and said “fine”; no apology or anything of that sort. He then told the receptionist to process the room for the price confirmed in the email. For the next few hours, there was completely no eye or verbal contact when we walked through the lobby to exit the hotel. The situation did not get any better when we checked out. Lawrence J printed the bill and left it on the desk. I looked at it and I am lucky to have some common sense because I looked at the bill and signed it without being assisted. After that, I remembered so clearly that I actually said ‘thank you’ as sign of courtesy when he gave me the receipt but I was not reciprocate with a word of ‘thank you’, ‘bye’, ‘see you again’ which I would expect from a hotel. I am from the service industry and professionalism is of the utmost importance. Should I make my way to Melaka again, I would try to stay in another hotel for I would not want to pay to be annoyed, angry or frustrated.
