“would be terrible if not for other redeeming factors”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed here for a night in January 2012.
If the review is based on the facilities and location, I would agree with most of the reviews here. The hotel has all the standard amenities ie towels, tea/coffee making facilities, complimentary bottles of mineral waters etc . However, the rooms are a little cramp and the furniture are dated. Location is good as it is just behind the famous Jonker Walk yet it is very quiet for those who prefer an early sleep. My problem with this hotel is the attitude and the professionalism from the staff or more accurately from a single staff named Lawrence J. I have an email confirming the room type, room tariff and confirmation number. Upon arrival, I was informed by the receptionist that the tariff was more than what was written in the email. I was surprised and asked for clarification. Lawrence J have the audacity to print out the email and pointed out that the room tariff he wrote was for a lower grade of room and that I have to pay more for the room confirmed. I was shocked. Why am I asked to pay for a mistake which was not my fault in the first place. It wasn’t because of the amount of extra money I have to pay. It was the failure of him to acknowledge his mistake and rectifying it. I angrily said, “no, it’s your fault, you deal with it or call your supervisor.” He tossed the paper and said “fine”; no apology or anything of that sort. He then told the receptionist to process the room for the price confirmed in the email. For the next few hours, there was completely no eye or verbal contact when we walked through the lobby to exit the hotel. The situation did not get any better when we checked out. Lawrence J printed the bill and left it on the desk. I looked at it and I am lucky to have some common sense because I looked at the bill and signed it without being assisted. After that, I remembered so clearly that I actually said ‘thank you’ as sign of courtesy when he gave me the receipt but I was not reciprocate with a word of ‘thank you’, ‘bye’, ‘see you again’ which I would expect from a hotel. I am from the service industry and professionalism is of the utmost importance. Should I make my way to Melaka again, I would try to stay in another hotel for I would not want to pay to be annoyed, angry or frustrated.

Room Tip: superior room is quite smaill. cant imagine standard

“Nice room, tiny shower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Always nice to find a quiet oasis in a bustling city! We are on a year long RTW trip, and these gems are rare. (read more about it at www.changesinlongitude.com). Also worth noting that Hotel Puri is a completely smoke-free property.

We had a deluxe double in the newer wing, which was large and well-equipped, with lots of nice amenities. Bathroom was fine, except shower was built into an odd corner which had a big wedge carved out for ductwork or something. This made the shower quite small, requiring some creative use of elbows when washing your hair. Too bad toilet was built adjacent, because there really was enough room to make the shower larger.

Breakfast was a nice buffet, also eggs cooked to order. Spa was pretty, with good massage, but the prices were a little on the high side for this part of the world.

Loved the antiques scattered everywhere, and the multiple courtyards. Always easy to find a quiet place to read or access wifi.

“surrounded by antiques”

love the character of this chinese mansion that turn into boutique hotel. from the tiles, the airy open space in between the floors, wooden furniture to the antique collections that represent the heritage of its mansion. another bonus is situated within malacca old quarter so a famosa, jonker street, malacca church and even st paul's hill can be visited within walking distance.

my room was spacious and very clean, equipped with modern amenities. ask the adapter to the receptionist and provided within seconds. thank you :)

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The hotel is a long thin shop-house furnished with exquisite period antiques, there are different sitting areas - just the front lobby is a treat, also the courtyard and dining area. We stayed in a junior suite which consisted of a downstairs lounge and bathroom and upstairs bedroom. The only window opened onto the courtyard, but the rooms were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Everyone seemed to arrive at breakfast at the same time so there wasn't always everything immediately available.
The location is fantastic for the Friday/Saturday night markets and for wandering around admiring all the other old family buildings. There are numerous wonderful restaurants in very easy reach.
I would thoroughly recommend this interesting busy hotel.

“Heritage Hotel in China Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights in early Jan 2012... It is a heritage hotel with modern facilities... Bear in mind there is no Lift.. We stayed on the third floor, our room was well appointed and had a balcony overlooking the garden...

The staff was friendly, it is worth metioning Joe... She made our stay comfortable and recommended few places of interest which is worth visiting... Joe is also good at photography... Whilst in Hotel Puri look out for Joe...

The location of the hotel is brilliant... Most of the places of interest is round the corner... Jonkers street... a drink in the geographers cafe.... China town walk.... art of drinking tea and loads of other places...

The common areas, restaurant, breakfast area are well done... There is also a museum at lower level illustrating the glorious past of Melaka and restoration of Hotel Puri.. it is must visit... We were thoroughly satisfied with our stay....
