Overall: good property for families with a great pool and activities for the kids; good rooms, food and service!
Property: We visited the Lalit Goa during the Christmas break in 2011. We stayed there for 6 memorable days/nights. Note that if you are on the property on Xmas or New Year eve, you will get dinged a mandatory gala dinner charge which is quite steep. We planned the trip in such a way that we were on the property between these two nights.
However, note that the property is in Canacona which is in South Goa. This area is far from the Goa tourist attractions in Panaji and North Goa. Given that we were with our kids with 3 other families and our main focus was relaxation and not tourism, this was not a major issue for us. We did go out on one day to the Old Goa/Panaji areas with a hired taxi (quite a few waiting just outside the property; be sure to check around by calling them and negotiating; haggling with them at the taxi stand is not very useful as they have a union).
The property itself is expansive and gives you a very nice uncluttered, relaxed atmosphere, just perfect for a rejuvenating vacation. Well maintained gardens, low rise buildings (no more than 2 levels) add to the feeling.
Highly recommended: we spent two magical evenings at nearby Palolem beach where we spent a 2-3 hours each time enjoying the drinks, the locals, tourists and the sunsets. Being Christmas, it was crowded, but the crowd didnt seem to bother us; we actually enjoyed the eclectic crowds, some fireworks and the local market next to the beach. The food at the shacks on the beach was great; choose one after checking around: there are a lot. From the hotel, its a 10 min car ride-round trip cost Rs 200.
Room: Nice room. Comfortable beds with a nice clean bath. Huge bed can easily fit a <10 year old. We had an extra bed for our elder child. The sit outs are nice and the baths are big and clean.
Service: good service overall. They allowed an early check-in (6am) after our arrival from Bangalore via Cochin. Car came to the bus stand in Canacona within a few minutes of calling. Very attentive staff all over the property. Room service was also ok.
Food: tried the breakfast buffet, which was quite a big spread. They have a live station which turns out omelets, dosas, pooris, pancakes etc. Also had lunch or dinner on all but one day. During lunch/dinner, the live stations turn out various Indian, Indo-Chinese and Continental treats which were a hit with the kids.
However, note that the restaurants tend to become stretched when crowded; whether it is for bfast or lunch/dinner. Service speed falls off. If you have any request that is not on the buffet (like a milkshake for our kids), it would easily take 15-20 mins to arrive and sometimes got mixed up. However the staff try to please, even if they were found to be 'sweating' (not physically of course!) under the demands! Pls note that food service at most properties like this and those on the beaches is slow; but then why are you in a hurry anyway? This is Goa, this is vacation time! Enjoy the pace!
Try to get the hotel package which incl breakfast and one major meal; we found it to be a good value with our kids. For the other meal, we had it at the beach shack of the Lalit right on the beach. The views, the food and and the drinks was a great experience. The kids loved the pasta and 'junk food' options!
Other amenities/observations: Lovely pool with two pool areas for the kids. Has a swim up bar as well. Spa was okayish. But we found the children's library/creche to be very useful; its managed by two ladies who ensure safety. We found this to be very useful to grab a shut-eye or two!
The beach is fantastic, esp during low tides at which point can be very safe for the kids. Watch out for the surf during high tides. Locals offer great oil massages as you laze out and the trinket sellers are not a pestering lot (I fond ths to be generally true all over Goa beaches: Miramar, Palolem etc). The beach also offers parachute rides, banana boat rides etc which we didnt try out. Be sure to walk all along the beach including the beach next door past the river (north side of the beach). Be sure to get back before the high tides roll in! Else you will need a auto ride to get you back to the property!
Also you can haggle your way to some great sunset boat rides at the southern end of the beach. You should get the prices down by around 50% from the initial quote. Skip these services offered by the hotel; the all inclusive cost is not worth it in our opinion.
Also used the gym which is quite good. Took many walks on the property. The golf course was being renovated when we visited. The children's water sports park (a small affair) was also being renovated when we visited. Check whether these are operational now.
Me and my elder son also rented bicycles from the property; we found this to be a great value to take short rides around the Canacona area. My son loved the rides!
