Just came back after another 2 weeks at the Colonia de Braganza and can't wait to go back in Dec,this was our 3rd year at the hotel and it was as good as the first, yes it has it's faults but you get what you pay and i'm afraid if you want better you will have to pay a lot more for it,we have been going to Goa for the past 16 years and stayed at 5 different hotels and there's not much to chose between them, the staff at the C d B are very friendly can't do enough for you,if you have any problems you only have to ask and it gets done A.S.A.P Can't wait to get back

“Beware of thefts!”

So this was my 3rd time to Goa and accomodation is and always will be basic in this type of hotel. The room was huge, enough for the 3 of us, very clean and staff very friendly. No complaints what so ever until my last day...
I had packed to leave on Friday morning (due to leave sat early hours, my family were staying an extra week in the same room)
When i cam back to the room late Friday to charge my phone, i noticed my iphone/ipad charger had gone. I obviously rasied this with the hotel manager who insisted that his staff were honest and that i 'should have put it in the safety deposit box'... My family insisted i check my bags again when i got home but alas the charger is gone. STOLEN!

I have been advised that its quite common for things to go missing on the last day.. to me it seemed like my bags were backed and this was laying out, possibly forgotten. Either way the hotel were NOT interested in helping me even when i threated to call the police (which would have been a complete waste of time)

Travellers please beware and anything at all that you value (even a charger) lock it away every day before you leave the room.
I would have given the hotel 4 stars had it not been for this.

Also anyone travelling to Goa in the next 4 weeks, beware it closes at 10/11pm due to elections and some other political stuff... no food or drinks can be served ANYWHERE after this time... clubs and pubs CLOSE DOWN.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor facing the pool or main entrance.

“busy old friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

My second holiday in this central hotel
i love it but some people might find it too much as Calangute is very busy
first timers should go outside this area if they want peace and quiet
the rooms are spacious but the furniture is old any one wanting a posh hotel this isnt it
but on the plus side the staff are great especially the room boys who do a great job and keep the rooms clean and supply clean sheets and towels
i will definately stay here again if i can get in !!I cant understand how people can moan when this is a budget hotel at a good price some seem to expect the Hilton
i have been travelling in India for 26 years and have been 49 times now

“Disgusting!”

Stayed in Calangute many times, read the reviews which gave out mixed signals so thought we would give it a try. What a mistake, we arrived at 12.30 early Boxing Day to be shown to our room, first impressions not good, very basic and no toilet seat, we were told it would be sorted in the morning, 3 days later it had no been sorted, the whole toilet had to be replaced as there was no way to fix the seat to the toilet. The hot water was hit and miss. A good nights sleep was had once we used the cushions off the settee. Most people we spoke to all had negative feelings about everything to do with this hotel, fortunately we were able to move out and found another hotel but some people had asked to move rooms(it seems that when you arrive they show you a room and if you don't like it they will offer you a better room if you pay a supplement. We were not prepared to do this so when we checked out early and was waiting for our taxi to take us to our other hotel the manager asked if we had any problems, we replied yes but he just walked away without asking what our problems were. some of this complex wants condemning and we were wondering if any travel companies actually read reviews and take any actions.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel!

“You don’t always get what you pay for.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Stayed here over the xmas and New Year holiday. For the first week we didn’t enjoy it. Having stayed in Goa 10 times before usually in Candolim or Baga, we found Calangute dirty, full of beggars and generally clogged up with traffic and spitting locals.
We tried 3 different rooms before we found one that was acceptable for a supplement for A/C which wasn’t necessary at this time of the year and included a TV with the footie back home. The bed was extremely hard in each room and stopped us getting a decent night’s sleep. The first 2 rooms were in the block where the reception was. We were on ½ board but they would only allow us 150 rupees a night, less than £2 which got us little more than rice and bread. However we did a ‘deal’ that meant we could have a meal every 2 days so we could have a meat dish as well! Hardly ½ board. I was ill after 2 days and couldn’t eat for 48 hours with constant vomiting.
The swimming pool saw very little sunlight as did the 10 beds around it. The palm trees needed cutting back to allow for some of the 11 hours of sunshine that you can get at this time of the year. The pool needed some TLC and chlorine and filters may have helped too.
Some positives about this place were the attentive waiters and cleaners who did an excellent job. The food at the hotel was on the whole very good, especially the xmas and New Year gala meals. The beach is lovely though you get lots of hassle from locals. The sun shone there all day.
For all its faults Calangute grew on us. The bars are much cheaper than in other areas in Goa though you have to put up with a lot of loud women of a certain age often from the north of England and their foul language after drinking too much cheap local booze along with their often tattooed partners. You get used to the frenzy of trying to cross the road, though I have never seen so much traffic in such a small area on New Year’s Eve. Some in the hotel were taking sleeping tablets obtained locally for bargain prices. Bonny’s almost opposite the hotel served excellent value meals of the highest quality and Flash shack on the beach was great to relax at with its spaced out music and attentive staff.

Room Tip: Get a pool view without air con in December
