My first visit to India & very worried after reading bad reviews, but had one of the best holidays and will be returning to the Beira Mar asap. The reception Manager was helpful when we asked to change rooms to one overlooking the fields, with many birds, water buffalo & mongoose, amazing sight. The grounds, hotel & pools were kept clean & tidy by the friendly, happy staff. Our room was cleaned & fresh sheets & towels every day if we left the key.The restaurant was efficiently run by Raymond the Manager, waiters Viz,Joe & Savio, thank you the food & service was excellent,we only ate out once. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere added to the charm. The hotel is set back away from the noise and bustle of the busy street, the beach five minutes walk, lovely foot massage £2!! Mojim beach 20 mins away in taxi was lovely go to Jack's shack Cool Place, lovely people & food. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have the best view & sunrise, if you don't like your room ask to be moved.

Really can't fault this place, our room was spacious and clean, with room cleaning carried out every day if required. Perfect location to get into Baga itself and onto the beach.
Majority of hotel staff were incredible, could not do enough for you and were polite throughout.
Obviously, this being India, it was a little dilapidated in areas and could do with a lick of paint here and there but, other than that, it was perfectly suited to our needs.
The main highlight for us, though, was the fantastic Thomas Cook rep, Gavin. He was incredible, made us feel like we were the only people he had to look after, no issue was left unsolved and his obvious passion and pride in his country, came across in all his recommendations about where to go, what to do and where to eat.
I can't praise enough the difference he made to our trip and I would recommend the Beira Mar solely on the fact that he would be your rep.

“Excellent trip, basic but fantastic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I stayed here with a friend for two weeks in November 2009 - a while ago I know, but after reading some of the rubbish reviews, I wanted to clear a few things up!!

My trip was amazing - we arrived ast a fairly decent time of day, only two other groups staying at the same hotel. We were met with fantastic receptionists and shown to our room. We noticed that the ceiling fan was pretty loose and has flash backs from Final Destination so went and spoke to reception straight away (remembering that this was only a 2* hotel at the time, not getting too peeved!) The staff showed us several rooms, but all had the same problem. We were taken to a room overlooking the second pool and within half an hour and a Kingfisher, they has repaired the ceiling fan and alleviated any concerns.

The staff were incredibly facilitating, so friendly and generous. We cannot fault them in any way. On the fourth night I came out in a rash and went to reception at around midnight. They called the doctor for me first thing in the morning and were so helpful - turned out to be down to the anti-malarial tablets before anyone thinks it was the living conditions!!!!

The man who ran the jewellery shop was such a lovely guy, so friendly, recommended everywhere to go - mosques, sight-seeing trips, markets, etc. He never once asked us to buy anything and was just happy with a chat. If anything, I would recommend going just to talk with him!! Oh and the diamonds he showed us were fantastic - only complaint was that he would let me have free ones!!

There was a lovely old man who rode round on his bike each morning and sold English & Indian papers for 5 rupees - excellent over breakfast!

The first four days we were there, there was a cyclone but not wanting to waste time, we bought lilos from the hotel shop and jumped straight in the pool - even then the waiters were more than happy to bring us our Kingfisher! Even the weather wasn't going to ruin our trip :)

Once the sun came out, we really fell in love - excellent position, directly on the Baga Strip. This was really close to Baga Beach, the famous Anjuna Flea Markets as well as Calangute and loads of restaurants & pubs (our favourite being Lazy Days).

You will I honestly couldn't recommend this hotel enough - visitors just need to appreciate that you get what you pay for. It is only 2* in a really poor country, but this hotel is far better than most in the UK - far better than Travel Inn or any of the rubbish that we pay for here!!

I loved it, and if I wasn't getting married I would be returning to this hotel as often as I could. Just gutted that weddings cost so much!!!

Ignore all of the other reviews - go there for yourself, try it, for £30 a night it has to be worth it :)

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the back of the hotel looked best although didn't seem to see much sun - t...

“NO NO NO”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We are frequent visitors to Baga and are always prepared for basic accommodation but this placeisntbasic its appalling. We checked in at 10.30 in the morning and the staff looked like they had worked for the last 24 hrs they just couldnt be bothered and we were an inconvenience, in fact the Jewel in the Crown Rep got hissy with them because they wouldnt send anyone up for the luggage. We eventually booked in and was taken down a dirt track up a dirty ant infested stairwell to room 161. The room was dark and the staff hung around as if they were waiting for us to say something. But as we have been before we were willing to give the place ago. But when I opened the curtains and the doors the place just got worse. The fridge had no handle and was completely covered in rust so you couldnt get in it without getting dirty. Every wall was filthy and obviously had been for many years. The bathroom was awul the shower curtainwas all stuck together and the toilet seat was filthy. The floor was sticky and the rubbish bin looked as if it had never been wiped over ever. Above the bed the light fittingshad been removed and there was bare wires hanging outover the head board. And finally not one piece of furniture was complete it all had something missing. The seat on the balcony looked like a cats scratch post. we came out for fresh air and to have a think and the noise from above from a group of russians was the finalstraw and we booked out total time taken 20mins. You may say we could have aked for another room but it wasnt the basic ness I was complaining about it was te filth nd if ur first room is filthy why should the next be better, if thats the case why not give me that room first!!!!!!! Jewel in the Crown you should be ashamed of yourselves for using this property there are much better at much better rates. Stay away be warned

Stayed in hotel for 3 weeks starting 29th December. 1st room we had for 3 nights during which I hardly slept. Inconsiderate tourists both Russian and English hanging around the small pool drinking until 4am- you know who you are!!! Jewel in Crown rep told me they could do nothing about behaviour- WHY NOT??? Reception more helpful. We were transferred to another room on the second floor overlooking the fields.GREAT peace at last. The photos posted of mould etc are a bit unfair. You get what you pay for and DO remember the rooms/hotel are possibly shut up for the monsoon season. The room boys kept our room very clean- you must hand your key into reception to have it done. However they aren't the only people working there and I seriously believe they made a lot of money by hassling tourists. I saw an advert in the local paper for a security guard £50 a month was wage.My suggestion is be firm with these room boys. They even spun us a story about THEM going home(fibs). We gave them 100 rupees each and bottles of beer not drunk. They seemed happy enough with that. I didn't ask if there was a tip box at reception, I would have preferred to give a tip so that everyone got a share. The reception staff and the security guards were lovey -no hassles for tips from them!!

Room Tip: We only had a fan but thats cool enough dec/jan. Something to consider when A/C is extra. The rooms...
