-Fairly near the airport (45 min drive)
-Beautiful, large property with its own unspoiled stretch of beach
-Lots of free activities (beginner’s yoga, archery, 9-hole putting course, bicycles, tennis, gym, dance lessons)
-Excellent food and generally competent wait staff
-Monsoon Package meal plan was good value—tons of food and could try all restaurants
-Large, mostly clean pool with some loungers and umbrellas.
-The Housekeeping Manager and housekeeping team tried to make up for serious deficiencies by providing a surprise rose petal bubble bath, an anniversary cake (it wasn’t our anniversary, but good effort anyway), and a pillow with our names embroidered on it in red and gold that was so randomly conceived but also so cute that we couldn’t help but be delighted.
-2 hour wait for check-in, even though we arrived after check-in time. No one even asked us if we’d been helped for almost 30 minutes…and then it took another 15 to actually get anyone to help us. Room wasn’t ready for ages!
-Despite request for king bed, ended up with two single beds pushed awkwardly together
-Cleanliness – lack thereof! The room was pretty dirty—with mud stains on the floors and walls, unidentified crud on the toilet seat (gross!), rusted metal in the bathroom, molded grout, etc. We’ve stayed in
-When full, pool and restaurants can feel very crowded (was full our first night there) and not peaceful at all.
-Convention of middle-aged Indian men turned the pool from a serene hangout to a rowdy, disgusting, somewhat lecherous male pool party that scared away couples and families with kids. I did not feel comfortable lounging poolside in a bikini with this group intermittently leering at me.
-Accommodations Manager had an erroneous and strange idea of what an “upgrade” should look like. When we were displeased with the cleanliness in our room, he showed us another room – that he said he was 100% confident we would like, as it was a “really nice room.” It was smaller than our room, still had 2 twin beds pushed together, and had a smaller bathtub, a smaller and much older tv, fewer windows, and an armchair instead of a couch. The only reason it could possibly have been nicer was that it looked out over the golf course (and to the sea, in the far distance), while our original room looked out on a garden. It also wasn’t cleaner than our original room. So I was unclear on why he was 100% confident we would think it was a better room. Someone needs to upgrade his taste level!
- A bit difficult to get off the property to try out other dining spots, and the restaurants are very pricey if you’re not on an all-inclusive (think 1250 INR entrees and 850 INR salads, 450 INR for a 150 ml glass of domestic wine, all before taxes).
- Service was hit-or-miss. Some people (especially restaurant waiters upstairs and at Alegria) were very good, but others were pretty mediocre.
-The beach ambiance is ruined a bit by hawkers (even in off season) who would inevitably accost you as you walked by the water and try to get you to come into their beachside shops. Even after we bought a few things from them on the first day, they continued to catch us every day afterward to ask us to buy more…a bit brazen. I imagine its much worse during high season.
-We were told not to swim during monsoon, and the beach access was closed at night. Despite those warnings, the surf did seem fairly calm at times and we did see small groups getting in the water (not sure if they were locals or hotel guests). Because of the unsafe swimming warning, there are no loungers or umbrellas on the beach during the monsoon season – which meant it was really only a good place to go for a long walk, but you couldn’t really hang out and lounge there.
- If you’re picky about which table you sit at while dining, make a reservation for a specific table the night before you plan to eat there. Otherwise, the restaurants might be “sold out” as they seem to have only 1 seating per night – or you might get stuck with a bad table.
Make sure you book a King room, otherwise you'll get stuck with two Twins pushed together! Also...
