We stayed here for 3 days at the beginning of April this year (we had planned to stay longer but felt we had to cut our losses & move on)
Firstly, we'd like to say that the actual house, the furniture, the gardens, the pool, everything lived up to our expectations LOOKS wise. The family who owned it were friendly, but proved ultimately ineffectual in dealing with our complaints.
On the first day, we checked in & decided to have a rest laying by the pool as we had journeyed from Palolem. We watched the staff jet washing the rooves of the buildings around the pool, with water & bleach (which we could smell very strongly). They proceeded to wash the bleachy dirty water into & around the pool area, then some other members of staff started mopping the pool area, using a mop & bucket, but also the pool water...we watched as a dirty greasy scum started to collect on the surface of the water in the pool, when we couldn't stand this any more (let alone the noise) we found someone to complain to, who promptly walked off mid conversation! When we found them again (sitting calmly chatting in reception) we tried again, saying that as the pool is supposed to be open until 7pm, could they not have closed the pool a bit earlier as it looked pretty quiet guest wise, & cleaned then without disturbing the people who were already there? We were informed that they were preparing for some guests who were arriving tomorrow..they seemed to have no concern whatsoever about their guests who were already there!
The next day, we did receive an apology, we were assured that the pool would be cleaned (it wasn't) & that they would upgrade us to a deluxe room for the inconvenience. This seemed to be ok at first (with working air con at least, unlike our previous room) but upon closer inspection the pillowcases & bed sheets hadn't been changed since the previous occupants! We don't feel that we were asking for anything outlandish, just the fundamental things (like clean sheets) that any hotel, let alone one charging these prices, should provide as a matter of course.
As we've said, the owners seem friendly enough, but the all male staff (particularly some of the waiters & bar staff) were surly & rude & seemed to spend a lot of time hanging around the pool area, particularly when there were women sunbathing there.
We also caught a member of staff chasing a dog away with a pair of scissors in his hand (it had wandered into the grounds panting & in need of water) & another member of staff picking up large stones to throw at another dog which looked like it might come into the grounds. He only stopped when we asked if he would like us to stone him every time he did something we didn't like. We realise that different cultures might feel differently from us about animals they live alongside, but we feel very strongly that both these reactions about dogs coming into the grounds were unnecessary to say the least.
As we've already said, this is a beautiful hotel, but at approx £80 a night, it's way too expensive for all the hassle!
