I stayed at ALOFT in Birmingham for a wedding back in May, sharing a room with my friend and fellow bridesmaid. Since I'm not from Birmingham and was going to specific events associated with the wedding, I can't comment too much on the location, but I will say that it was in walking distance of a drug store, a grocery store, a place to grab lunch, etc. which was nice.
The interior of the hotel is very trendy, as people have noted, but in a cheap, Ikea-looking kind of way. The lobby is sort of industrial, with the reception desk in a circular console. There's a breakfast area over to the side where you can purchase coffee, bagels, etc. in the mornings (their website, I thought, made it sound like these things were complimentary, but they're not).
On to what I think is the most important part: the room. The room is trendy to the point of being ugly. Picture a room from the show "Portlandia" and that's what it is. The beds were comfortable enough and clean, and I appreciated that there were two queen beds. There isn't an actual closet, just some hooks in the sink area on which to hang your stuff. The sink area isn't closed off from the rest of the room, so we had to stare at our clothes and shoes all weekend. Here comes my least favorite part: the toilet/shower is separated from the sink area by a sliding door, which is also a mirror. The track on which our sliding mirror/door was supposed to slide must not have been greased up enough, so it was difficult to move and made a HUGE racket - we agreed just not to "close" the bathroom door if we got up in the middle of the night. Also, sliding a mirror isn't exactly the same as closing a door, so I didn't feel like there was a lot of privacy in the bathroom. Neither of us could figure out how to use the room phone, so when it rang we couldn't answer it, not could we call down to the front desk for anything, which, honestly was just as well. Apparently, the front desk says "Aloha!" as a greeting when you call down there, which I just think is stupid.
All in all, it was fine. Clean room, comfortable bed. For the reasons I mention above however, I did not feel that it was worth $180 and I would not stay there again, nor would I recommend it to others.
