This hotel is not a 4 star hotel. It is a run down hotel which is devoid of any concept of service. The other reviewer (see below) was right in deriding this property.

Heads up: I made the mistake of using a travel agent (Liale, at Tropical Tours in Copacabana/Rio - not recommended) who booked my tour of Brazil through a larger Brazilian agency, CVC (also, not recommended). My hotels were supposed to be quality 4 star hotels. NOT. This hotel is a perfect example of what can happen when you use a Brazilian travel agency. Once, they have your money, you are basically SOL.

When I arrived at this hotel, I asked to see my “superior” room before accepting. The room was small, dark and dirty – worse yet, was the old, worn foam mattress. I refused this room and demand that I get the quality I paid for. The manager told me that this is the room I get. He said it was the agency’s fault, not his. I called the agency and told them I would not accept the room and I would dispute the entire trip charge with VISA. Only when I told them this did I get some action. The agency then called the hotel manager and the next I saw him he was smiling warmly, telling me that he would put me in another “superior” room. I refused. The hassling continued until finally I was put in one of this hotel’s “suites.” The “suite” was just barely acceptable. It has a very old mattress, that is ripped and torn (photo), the paint pealing is from the ceiling (photo) and the bathroom amenities consist of a small, cheap bar of soap (photo). That night, before sleeping in their “suite” I crushed a cockroach fleeing across the floor. This hotel is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Caveat: 4 star hotel ratings in Brazil are not the 4 star quality that we know in Europe, North America, Asia and most of the developed world. Caveat: to protect yourself, always use your credit card and use an agent from your country so you can have recourse when you have problems. Caveat: Do not trust the photos on the hotel web page, and refuse to accept anything that does not meet your standard.

Ocean Air cancelled it's flight from Recife to Maceió and so they arranged an overnight stay for my wife and I at the Recife Monte Hotel. I will never fly Ocean Air again either...this was a disrespectful experience.

The Recife Monte has a regular lobby and the staff is very kind.
Don't get fooled cause the good side ends right there. Our room was dark, stinky, dirty and the air conditioning was not working properly. The window reveals an astonishing view to a huge wall like 2 meters in front, and nothing else. The furniture is old and the minibar was literally falling apart. The TV followed the previous standards.

But believe me that the worse part was about to begin when we tried to take a bath. Let me say this: if Hitchcock have stayed at the Recife Monte, he would certainly re-write one of his scripts. Bates Hotel is a "boutique hotel" if compared to the Recife Monte when it comes to the bathroom. When you turn on the lights, you may clearly see what's going on over the ceiling cover, which is even worse when the place looks like cockroaches' Disneyland.

The matress and pillows were as thin as my patience at that time. It was late for changes and we had a plane to catch early in the morning
after. We prayed to survive the night and tried to get some sleep. I am not sure, but I think I dreamt about demolishing the Recife Monte and sueing the air company for millions of dollars. Someone, please, shut down that hell hole. Now!!!!
