Just got back from a week in Kolkata spent staying at the Peerless. The staff there are extraordinary. They will do anything to make you happy. The two restaurants in the hotel are both excellent, especially the Bengali cuisine place, Aaheli. The bar, called Ego, is also a fun place although not usually too crowded. The girls who provide musical entertainment there are fun.
The hotel is located in the center of Kolkata, and there are taxis available 24 hours a day right outside. There is good shopping and there are good restaurants within short walking distance.
As for the rooms, they are good-sized. There was a fairly strong smell in the hallway of the 8th floor, where we stayed. To me it smelled like insecticide, but we never saw a single bug during our stay, so if it is it must be working! Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom was quite large. Everything was very clean. Fresh fruit, chocolates, and lots of bottled water are included every day in the price of your room, as is an outstanding breakfast buffet every morning. Do not miss this!
I would definitely stay at the Peerless again if I am in Kolkata. I would give it a 3 1/2 star rating just for the room based on western hotels, but it is probably 4 1/2 stars for Kolkata. Add in the great service and great food there and you have a good place to stay.
