“Nice hotel for Kolkata”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2008

Just got back from a week in Kolkata spent staying at the Peerless. The staff there are extraordinary. They will do anything to make you happy. The two restaurants in the hotel are both excellent, especially the Bengali cuisine place, Aaheli. The bar, called Ego, is also a fun place although not usually too crowded. The girls who provide musical entertainment there are fun.

The hotel is located in the center of Kolkata, and there are taxis available 24 hours a day right outside. There is good shopping and there are good restaurants within short walking distance.

As for the rooms, they are good-sized. There was a fairly strong smell in the hallway of the 8th floor, where we stayed. To me it smelled like insecticide, but we never saw a single bug during our stay, so if it is it must be working! Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom was quite large. Everything was very clean. Fresh fruit, chocolates, and lots of bottled water are included every day in the price of your room, as is an outstanding breakfast buffet every morning. Do not miss this!

I would definitely stay at the Peerless again if I am in Kolkata. I would give it a 3 1/2 star rating just for the room based on western hotels, but it is probably 4 1/2 stars for Kolkata. Add in the great service and great food there and you have a good place to stay.

“Loved The Peerless !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2008

If you like authentic Bong food - ahh.... Aheli is awesome ! Found service to be excellent. Relatively clean rooms. Rates are reasonable considering it is in a metro and centrally located. Location ---- can't beat this. I went there with family twice. I was desperately looking for reservation for my second stay in Dec '06 and they could not get one on such short notice and that too during peak time (Christmas). Anyway, after talking to the manager, the staff managed to confirm my booking. Quite frankly, I would not go to any other hotel in Kolkata including Taj, Oberoi or Hyatt. Yes, part of the reason is Bong food. Will stay there again .. .whenver I am visiting Kolkata

“Dreadful for business”

I have now stayed at this hotel twice but I will never stay there again. The staffs just don’t seem to care about whether the paying guest is satisfied or not. For business travellers who need access to the internet, forget it. They sell you a card labelled Rs250 for Rs275 for one hour of access. When you get it, you have to jump through hoops to make it work. When it doesn’t work they send someone to your room who has used a browser before but understands far less about internet access than the average business traveller. “Oh you need to enter the card number here and the PIN here,” he said. “Oh really, I must be very stupid,” said I. Of course, it didn’t work.

Later, the reception desk said the Internet was broken and would be back at 06:00. At that time, it didn’t work, so I asked again. “It will be ready at 07:00.” It wasn’t working then. I took a walk and returned to the lobby. “Is internet access working now?” “Let me send someone to your room.” I asked why they didn’t know. She didn’t understand. I explained that if I asked if there was hot water in my taps, would they need to send someone to my room to answer the question. Eventually, it did work; but if you stay there, use IE to log in not Firefox as the latter doesn’t work for some reason.

The food was poor. I entertained my business guest for the evening buffet. It was expensive and not too good.

The only positive aspect is that the hotel is close to the market.

  • Liked — Close to the market
  • Disliked — internet access; competence of the staff

“Arrogant staff, strange business practice”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2007

When we arrived at the Peerless Inn (quite desperate for a room), the staff at the reception asked several times "Are you really able to pay?" They then made us pay 6 nights in advance, even though we only wanted to stay 3 nights. Afterwards they told us that we would have to pay for everything else directly (like items from the minibar).
When our laundry was ready the roomservice phoned us twice to ask wether we would be able to pay the bill but just didn't bring it to our room. It came only after I complained to the manager and waited for more than an hour.
On the night before we left I asked for the bill and the rest of the advance but the reception staff told me to wait till the next morning. In the morning the accountant wasn't in so they said they couldn't give us the 740 $ they owed us. Only after I started to write down the names of the employees the manager arrived and made them give us our money.
We have never been treated so bad anywhere!
The room was not great but okay, the breakfast was quite good.

“Nice Hotel Well Located”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2007

I stayed at the Peerless Inn while attending a conference. While it was not especially close to the conference site it was very well situated in central Calcutta. The rooms, while not overly large, were quite comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included in the stay and there was a very good selection from the buffet or you could order eggs a la carte. It is also much less expensive than other comperable brand name hotels so very good value for money.

The bar on the ground floor nice and the waiting staff are very good.

My only complaint was a somewhat noisy central air system.
