“Pleasant Stay for a day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

The location of this hotel is simply the best. Being right on JL Nehru road you are within walking distance of Park street, Lindsay street.

You can spend hours together on shopping ( not high street shopping - but bargain shopping) around the hotel. You also get to try out the famous street food of Kolkata - from momos to chinese food to mughlai - all served by the roadside vendors.

We were upgraded to a suite - which was spacious and neat. Room service was prompt.

The complimentary breakfast was excellent. A very large spread, well done and well presented.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the J L Nehru Road and Maidan.

“what a disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

I arrived at this 4 star hotel, in my opinion 3star, late at night.
They offered me one of their 'superior' rooms, it was dark, depressing and even a little dirty! I would not accept this room so was moved to a suite which was much better, very spacious but upholstery etc old and looked in need of updating.
The service in this hotel was terrible. Lots of Managers but no-one actionally doing anything, very slow to act upon any request. Communicating with their staff also a problem as they spoke very little English.Even the hotel operator did not speak clear English. My telephone had a mind of its own, often it rang but no-one there!
During my 4 night stay in the Peerless Inn, on two occasions the rooms above mine needed repairs due to water leakages. I was expected to put up with the constant noise of drilling and banging for several hours at a time. The Management refused to stop the work, saying it was " unplanned emergency repairs". If the hotel bothered to regularly maintain the hotel, then these emergencies would not keep happening.

The food in there Bengal restaurant was quite good. As for the other restaurant, for get it!! Good for breakfast but that is all. Our New Years Eve Gala dinner was horrilbe, food ghastly.

On a positive note, the beds are comfortable, the sheets and pillows made for a good night's sleep.
I suggest that if you want to used the hotel purely for a quick business stay of say one night, then OK but not for long, nor for a vacation.

Kolkata is generally a horrible dirty city, too much traffic so very difficult to get around. Try not to go there unless you absolutely have no option.

Room Tip: Dont accept the first room they give you just becuase you are tired from travelling. They do have so...

“the good location helps to offset some of the problems here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

I wondered why I had been given a "free upgrade." The answer came a few minutes later when I was left in my room and discovered that I had absolutely no hot water and constant banging over my head. I had just arrived after a long journey from the US and needed to sleep. I was told the banging would stop by 5pm and that hot water would be made available. Neither thing happened. I requested to change rooms and was told the hotel was completely sold out, then magically I was shown an available room that was dark and smelled horrible and also had no
hot water. The banging went on for more than 2 days, night and day. As for the lack of hot water, the female manager on duty had the nerve to tell me that Indian people don't require
hot water to shower "at this time of year." I was shocked by this response.
The breakfast buffet was excellent except for the last morning which was a holiday in India. The manager was not working, and it showed. The tables were not cleaned properly for the next guests, with dirty linens and half-full water bottles left on the tables that were supposed to be ready for new people to sit down and eat. I really liked the fact that free and generous mineral water was provided in the room and in all the restaurants. Much appreciated.
Front door staff and bell desk staff very nice and helpful.

Room Tip: make sure your room has hot water before you unpack!

“Nice hotel and close to the cinema”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

If you stay at this hotel be certain to visit the cinema next door for an experience of a true Bollywood film atmosphere. It was definitely a highlight of my trip. The hotel itself is nice with friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms and good food. The bathrooms are very good with hairdryers and HOT water, not something found in all Indian hotels. Also free Wi-fi so was able to check in online for the journey home which is a huge bonus
