“good place to stay, but outdated”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

we had a spacious room that was clean, but the decor definitely made it feel like we were stuck in the 80s. BIG PLUS: continuous hot water and a western-style shower (i.e., a glass door separated the shower from the rest of the bathroom). for comparison purposes for future travelers: a decent stay relative to other hotels, but this would most likely be rated as a 2-star hotel in U.S.

“Very Disappointed the second time around!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

I had last visited Astor in March 2011, and had a very pleasant experience
However, on this trip, the hotel was a complete disappointment.
The rooms were alright in size, but the beds were not very comfortable. Additionally I had to kill a couple of cockroaches in the night, not a pleasant task at any time and especially nauseating just before you sleep.
The bathroom was poky and the towels did not look or feel clean. For the class of hotel the food was dreadfully overpriced and just alright.
Rs. 70 for a bottle of mineral water felt like highway robbery. Incidentally they don't offer any complementary bottles of mineral water which most restaurants offer.
Televisions are the outdated boxes and not LCDs which are now standard in most business hotels.
Coming to the good points, Astor is very conveniently located and access to Park Street and other business areas is quick. The staff remains helpful and quick to respond.

I think if you look around there will be much better options at this price.

“What a rip off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

What can I say but it's just a rip off. The rooms were EXTREMELY dirty and smelly. Layer of dirt every where. The linen were also ancient. Think of skin disease before planning to stay there. I would have bolted the minute I got in but unfortunately had to stay the night as it was really too late to move. Poor service.

Only positive is centrally located. Would never recommend to anyone.

“I would like to give ZERO stars”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

...but that's not possible unfortunately. They would deserve it...
It smelled already in the so called "lobby". Room smelled also. It was a "superior" which I got for 90 EUR. Such a rip-off. There was no window in the room! They gave me a room with a window then but this was smelly, too. It was a real bad experience!

“Avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

My first stay at the astor, Kolkata . As you get in the lobby, wait..there is no lobby. Just a small reception area in the stairwell. It is a very old building, high floors, with a nice polished staircase. You will get to see a lot of this staircase since there are no elevators. And if your room is on the second floor, you will have to climb a lot.
Now the room, must say it is quite big. ( i had a delux room) twin beds, with a hard mattress, and even harder pillows. None too clean. There is no central airconditioning. There was a room airconditioner. Noisy and did not cool at all.
Bathroom also not too clean. Bathtub was cracked.
Televison is still the ancient one, wherein all hotels now have LCDs.
No complimentary water also. You ave to buy water at Rs 72 a bottle.
Breakfast: Rudimentary. Toast, bread, butter and eggs. And some other stuff totally avoidable.
Prices are steep for Kolkata. It is Rs 6500 (corporate rate) for the delux, when at around Rs 5500 you will get much better places to stay.
So totally avoidable.
