“Excellent facilities and service”

After two visits in the last few months,. The Taj Bengal has really grown on me. It’s not as centrally located as the Oberoi but the upper floors have great views and the facilities are excellent. The Indian restaurant has great food. There is a well equipped gym, large swimming pool, beauty salon and over priced gift shop. The staff is helpful and efficient. I’d be happy to stay here again. Allow about one hour or 75 minutes to get to the airport and about 15 minutes to get downtown.

Room Tip: the Club Floor rooms are large and have nice views

“I'd rather have sinks attached to the walls.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

During my second stay at this hotel, I went with my family, two adult children, a husband and my 80 year-old mother and 90-year old father. Since the hotel did treat me quite well during my last business trip they can't really go wrong. So many of us in tow, we took two Junior Suites. Lobby: beautiful, welcoming:great, checking-in: incredible, rooms: super clean. Until we entered the bathroom. A massive sink stood in the middle of the bathroom with no place to put my toiletries. A tiny sink was built inside the shower room (???). So where am I supposed to put all my toiletries. So I tried putting my toothbrush on the tiny sink in the shower and the glass I used got drowned in water when I took a shower. So I tried putting my toothbrush on the stand-alone sink, which by the way means you cannot look at yourself in the mirror when you floss or clean your face. Why? Because there's none to look at. Then my 80-year-old mother called from the suite next door saying she can't find any soap or face towels or shower caps in the bathroom. And you know why, because the designer of the bathroom must have thought - why not get all these silly toiletries out of the way and put all of them on a shelf about six feet off the ground so these silly short Asians will never find them and put a beautiful stand-alone sink in the middle. So fortunately for us there were my two grown-up children, tall enough to reach the toiletries. The wardrobe they thought would be strategically placed in the bathroom as well so that when one person is doing his or her nature's call let's make sure the other member can't get dressed and let's delay them getting ready. Oh Taj - perhaps you should ask your customers in the future when you decide to do a massive renovation whether they like old-fashioned sinks attached to the walls or a designer sink in the middle of the bathroom. Me, on my next trip to Kolkata I'm going to call hotels first and ask for a layout of their bathroom.

Room Tip: I think a deluxe room would have been a better choice. They probably have sinks attached to the wall...

“Quite kolkata”

Beautiful Hotel though little old but quite charming ,certainly depicts Kolkata.
Excellent food, courteous team. Standard rooms are not very big but nice interiors though the view outside is really not good and acoustics in rooms needs to be reconsidered, may be i stayed in the corner room which was little noisy and made early morning sleep little disturbed.

Room Tip: Check the noise inside the room and ask for a change for corner rooms, they change rooms if not full...

“Calcutta' pride.”

Taj Bengal was the second 5 star hotel in Calcutta after the venerable Oberoi Grand. It is one of the finest luxury hotels in the Taj Group. The location is fantastic overlookng the Race Course and Victoria Memorial and 5 minute drive from the business areas. The rooms are luxurious, particularly the club rooms which gives access to the Chambers Lounge where you can enjoy comlimentary drinks and a private dining area. The variety of food in the various retaurants is excellent particularly in Sonar Gaon the Indian Restaurant. The hospitality and quality of service is excellent. The best surprise is the tariff which is very reasonable for such a luxury hotel.
