Breakfast service to the room is great, as is the free internet, tv, and A/C. Decent western style bathrooms and hot water. Great staff - very helpful - and good room service too (I think it comes from the restaurant next door).

The Residency hotel is located in a residential area close Ballygunge, Rashberi and Gariahat. In the early mornings and evenings, expect to hear the crows and birds chirping away like mad.

You can find all kinds of tastey sweets and foods within easy walking distance. We stayed there because it was close to family. The room itself is very simple but it comes with a flat screen TV and fans. The people there were delightful and always ready to help - giving them tips (100 rupees only) also encourages "extra" assistance when needed. We felt safe and comfortable at this hotel. One other perk was that our room came with breakfast either Indian or Western. We also thought it was nice that they let guests use the internet for free.

The only downside to this sweet place was the very small bathroom and Lack of hot water. Toliet was right next to the open shower. There was a "geezer" in the room but hot water would only last for barely 5 minutes.

A Kolkata based friend of mine set me up at this hotel. While the hotel is not opulant, it is very comfortable, clean, reasonably priced and staffed by friendly and helpful staff. I stayed there for about 4 nights and didn't have a single complaint. One of the real advantages of this hotel is that it is a bit off the beaten path, towards the South end of Kolkata. I found it to be quiet and still easily within a short (20 minute) taxi ride into the heart of Kolkata. I paid 1800 rs per night for a big double room with a clean bathroom (western style), hot water, room service and air conditioning. The staff was very responsive to anything I asked for (room service, laundry, internet access etc.) This hotel is better known amoung locals than foreign tourists.
There is a large park, plenty of shops ATM's pharmacies, etc within 5 minute walk from the hotel. No taxi mafia at the front door. All in all, a very decent place to stay.
