“Location/room furnitures over size of room/noise/AC and breakfast quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012 via mobile

I was here over the weekend.

Positive to mention:
- Fantastic location, right in the city. Victoria memorial hall only 20 min away on foot.
- Furnitures of the rooms and interieur (eg. Bathroom etc.) are ok and up to the latest quality.

Negative to mention:
- size of the room is very small. Bed and furniture cover 4/5 of the room
- noise (construction work, talking in neighbouring rooms and reception) is disturbing (my room was only 3m away from the reception)
- airconditioning is ok, but for the sleep i always want to have it off. Although i turned it off, i got a sore throat and dry skin in the morning...
- breakfast, very limited selection. One müesli, 2 fruits and toast bread plus a little selection of indian (warm) food

“Bawa Walson, good value for money in a clean and causy room in the center of calcuta.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The Hotel is very well located and there is no problem to reach the hotel with public transport from the Airport. The walking distance is about 10min from the bus stop to the Hotel. The Hotel is located next to Museum of India but Victoria Memorial is a good 20min walk even it looks next door. However the Hotel is located in a side street next to a main street. The Hotel have many native guests who love to keep the doors of their rooms open and are shouting on the floors. It was very disturbing and we ask the guests to respect our privacy and to give us some sleep. That was not a problem at all and it got quiet strait away.

We did not have enough shower gel and it took housekeeping just view minutes to give us some more. The launder was without any problem nothing was missing all was cleaned and nicely packed. The price for the launder was fair.

The rooms are quiet small but please keep in mind that we are talking about a 3star Hotel and for the rate you pay it is absolutely acceptable and by far much more nicer than any 3* Hotel in Paris. The slide glass door to the shower and toilet is strange however in many other Hotels we stayed in Asia there was a big window outside the bedroom overlooking the shower and toilet. Looks like it is a trend in Asia to have this feature ;-)

The staff was friendly and at the breakfast we got nice omelette at request.
Just ask what they can do for you.
Breakfast package for early leave was small and nothing special but we got nice sandwich to eat and that service also counts.

There is a supermarket around the corner and an alcohol shop if you want grab a pint. Beside that MC Donald’s is about 10min walk. If you like to get food be careful where you go we went to an Restaurant full of people expecting great food turning out that they were serving pizza and pasta and we looked for more native food. So check the Restaurant Menu first what they serve.

“Ok for a night or 2”

It depends on why you are in Kolkata. If sight seeing and roaming around the city is the main purpose - all you need is a bed to crash - this is a great (safe) place. Right in the centre, very near happening places with almost anything and everything available "round the corner" . The street per se looks a bit shady. However, the Park Street is walkable from the hotel. Lots of eating options and thousands of bars and restaurants around.

If you are on business, need clean rooms with internet and efficient service and great breakfast - look some where else.

Unfortunately I was on business trip.

The check in was fairly quick, the staff helpful (though the fellow who brought my bags to the room from reception - about 10 feet distance) was more keen on the tip than my comfort.

The room is ok. The bed cover was not clean but the bedsheets looked clean. Plenty of pillows - i love that - There is a table, chair, small cupboard. Few things like biscuits, etc on sale. My room was on ground floor - the view out of the covered window was gas cyliners of the kitchen! Surprisingly there is no mirror in the room.

The wash room was big enough with seperate shower area and a exteremly different bath fittings. Unless you are explained its working - you may take some time to fgure out the relation between a knob and the faucet. The complimentararies included just a small soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser. The towel and napkin (only 1 each) was not good - it looked washed but old and was not crisp dry.

I ordered roti subzi in the room - taste was good - portion smallish - served without any onoins/pickle - the usual accompaniments. Breakfast next day was lack lustre. Cold, minimal and uninspriring. Upma, Aloo paratha, fried potato, saute veg, chicken cutlet, boiled egg and toast, cut paapaya and watermelon. Everything was cold.

If you need a taxi, it is better to book it a day early. Thus the overall experience for a veteran traveller was average rather than WOW!

If the the price comes down by about 25% - I will rate this hotel higher. The price to performance as of now is average.

“Great choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011 via mobile

This is the best hotel in sudder street! The restaurant is very overpriced and the service is not good, but the hotel is a very good choice. The rooms are very well kept and the room rate includes breakfast. The breakfast buffet is fairly good although the waiters are not nice and they rush you into it. But everything else is ok.

“50% off if book online. Lost a point for rude staff member.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Stayed at this hotel 3 times. First time, a lovely experience, we arrived late at night, the security guard and the receptionist were awake (!) chatty and welcoming. We were given an upgrade and definitely needed it after our train ride! The room was clean, lovely bathroom. The room was well equipped with a TV, tea making facilities and bathroom kit. Breakfast was a buffet, great food.

The second time we arrived it was a different experience. Our train had been delayed by several hours and we arrived on the 11th October, slightly worse for wear. The receptionist that greeted us was rude, flippant and quite honestly made me want to go elsewhere. We were tired and had been travelling for over 24 hours and were not expecting this attitude from the one person who was meant to welcome us. It ruined the rest of our stay with them, as he seemed to go out of his way to ignore us.

We had booked the third stay at the same time as the second, and by this time all the other hotels were full. So we were forced to come back to Bawa. This time, it was a different receptionist who greeted us warmly and regained our feelings of affection for the hotel.
The staff in the breakfast lounge were always friendly, and as we were waiting for our taxi to arrive, one of the staff came out to chat and see if we had enjoyed our time at the hotel.
This hotel is definitely geared to receive businessmen, not travelers, regardless of their budget. And a note to rude receptionist, if Calcutta/India was slightly cleaner, we would have looked slightly better when we arrived the second time.

Book ahead on the website for 50% off the price of a room.

Room Tip: Check the bath mat is clean!
