I am just back from a 5-day trip to Jaipur to attend the annual Jaipur Literature Fest. Had great fun there and the stay was also pleasant because of my stay at the Snehdeep guest house. I found Snehdeep on the net and then looked it up on Tripadvisor. Although most of its reviews were good, I was slightly apprehensive because of just one negative review I read on this site - it's funny how we immediately factor in the negative to make a judgement.
However, my own stay there has been pleasant. Snehdeep is a family-run place. While the family stays in a separate unit on the ground floor, the guest rooms are on the floors above. I found my interaction with the owner, Manojji, helpful and non-intrusive. In fact, the whole family seemed really sweet. As a woman travelling on my own, it's important for me to stay at a place where I feel secure and comfortable. From my somewhat limited experience of solo traveling, I've found that budget hotels don't work many times - there's a big chance that I may stick out like a sore thumb amidst Indian families and business travellers. And the attitude of the hotel staff can also be a bit off - they usually don't know how to deal with an Indian woman travelling on her own. So, a place like Snehdeep makes great sense for me - it is run by open-minded people that are used to receiving guests from all over the world. In fact, I found that there is a Japanese woman doing her P.H.D. who has been staying at Snehdeep off and on - for months together - for the past many years.
One thing that I'd been worried about after reading the reviews was that Snehdeep's distance from the city centre might be quite large. But it didn't turn out to be so - although it's not bang in the middle of the citty, it's well-connected and I didn't find either the commuting or the actual distances any hassle.
This is a good place if you are travelling on your own or you want to stay with a local family and get an insight into how they live. Another plus is that Manojji is extremely knowledgeable about Rajasthan. In addition, he is a devoted conservationist and very well travelled. You can easily make this place a starting point for further travels in Rajasthan once you get an idea of what all is possible.
This is a great place for budget travellers and solo women travellers. Highly recommended!
