I booked quite early direct with the hotel, and they wouldn't confirm whether I could have the deluxe level room, although I asked for one. They clearly wanted to keep them up their sleeves for favoured guests, WHICH ANNOYED ME. The ordinary level room was, however, fine for the weekend. The hotel pickup from the airport was smooth, and overall the staff were polite and friendly.
We were asked to swap rooms on our first night when we returned to the hotel from dinner at 10pm. It was "sold" as being for our benefit because our bed was twin beds pushed together, and the central aircon unit was just above our ceiling. Actually we think it was because there was a group on our floor who already had a few rooms and wanted ours, too. Incredibly the would-be swap-ees (in an identical room on the floor below) had already agreed to "help us" and were ready to go at 10pm ... just for us. But we had already unpacked and settled in, so we said no. And strangely we didn't hear much noise from the aircon. Maybe if it had been an upgrade to the type of room I had tried to book in the first place, I might have been tempted.
We enjoyed this small-ish hotel mostly for the fabulous location, which is on a corner near the Colaba Causeway in a tree-lined side street, and five minutes from the water. It's VERY well located for many major attractions - museums and monuments, plus parks, shopping and restaurants - all within an easy walk of 20 minutes, at the most.
Our room was nicely, if boringly, renovated. It's a good quality business hotel style. Lots of marble, glass and hard surfaces. For a holiday it was lacking in character, but we were happy to have a lovely firm bed/s, good quality sheets, nice towels, a big shower, a bath (we didn't use) and a reasonable amount of space. The room was well serviced.
We weren't so happy about the TV - fair enough to have lots of Indian language stations, but some in English would have been good - there were only a few. It was disappointing we couldn't watch the Australian Open Tennis finals bc there was no Star Sports. There seemed to be a good number of Arabic language stations (this hotel hosts a lot of Gulf visitors, apparently). But it was frustrating that English-speaking tourists were not as well served - there seemed to be a fair few Western guests at the hotel, too.
Our electronic door "keycard" stopped working and the hotel was not able to reprogram it over the weekend we were there, or provide a replacement that worked. We had to ask for a staff member to open the door for us when we returned to our room, which was irritating for everybody, I imagine.
The breakfast was OK only - but enough to start the day. There was no other refreshment service provided that I could see although bottled water was available.. The staff on reception were helpful and recommended some good (if expensive) local restaurants.
The room had a safe, and there was a laptop with Internet in the foyer, which was locked away at night - but you could use the office PC at night if necessary.
So service OK, room comfortable and clean, and a great location. I would use this hotel again.
Room Tip: Try for 4th floor because it's the top floor with nobody above. Rooms at the back have less stre...
