“Great food and conversation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Food, conversation and a tranquil setting are three reasons to stay at Gitanjali. Traveling on my own, I appreciated that Yamuna joins her guests at the table and has much interesting to tell. The homestay atmosphere and small number of rooms means the other guests tend to be open. Being on the green edge of Mysore, you won't find alternatives in walking distance for dinner. You'd be foolish to pass up the Coorg cooking here anyway...there was an array of dishes on the table, all news to me and each better than the last. I enjoyed the bird life, poinsettias, generally lush surroundings and family pets as well. Yamuna was very helpful as well when Kingfisher cancelled my flight to Bangalore with little notice. For orientation, a single room in Nov 2011 was Rs 5500.

“Simple, but lovely retreat.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Simple rooms in a quiet setting on what used to be a coconut estate, with meals served in the home of Jamuna, daughter of the founders of Gitanjali Homestay. Meals were among our best in southern India, prepared by local women. Breakfasts included coffee from the owners' coffee estate in Coorg, homemade jams and ranged from porridge to scrambled eggs, chiapattis and rice. Wide-ranging conversation with the delightful owners made the visit more than just a B&B. Located on the outskirts of Mysore, but only a very short drive to local attractions.

Room Tip: There are only about four to six rooms, all on ground level and open to a front patio with seating a...

The best of Homestays. Up market combination of best of Indian hospitality and Western amenities. You arrive in glorious garden surrounding your bungalow. Calm and green on edge of Mysore. Gracious welcome and care from Yamuna with much helpful infomation and suggestions. Distinctive Coorg cuisine and good conversation with hosts and other house guests (just 4 rooms). A 5 star experience. Be aware it is out of the centre of the city - you have to plan taxis ahead.

“Peaceful and welcoming”

The Gitanjali property is a few kilometres from town making it extremely quiet and peaceful. The rooms are tasteful and the sitting area outside is very pleasant. In contrast to another review, we loved that there is no TV or Wifi, it is the perfect place to switch off and read your book! The breakfast and dinner were a real plus - freshly cooked, local dishes, often made with organic ingredients. We live in India but ate food here we had not eaten elsewhere. The location means you need to hire a vehicle for the day as you cannot go out onto the road to hail a rickshaw. Yamuna will arrange this for you but ask her to clarify the price as 2 times out of 3 the driver tried to overcharge us, the final time claiming the time it took for him to come to and from the taxi office. We refused and it got sorted out in the end. Yamuna allowed us to keep the room until we left at 3pm, making the last day more relaxing. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay, it was a great choice for us. Also recommend a visit to Somnatpur temple.

“Nice place but a tad over-rated”

We just spent a week-end at this place going by some of the good reviews that this place received. While our expectations were very high with regards to the place our actual experience turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Our first disappointment was that when we arrived in the afternoon and inquired about dinner at their place (which they claim they serve) we were informed that we had to let them know in the morning!!! I wish they'd told this to us a day before when we spoke to them and not in the afternoon when it was too late for us. We ended up going out to have dinner, in spite of us having booked a homestay. I was also disappointed to note some of the basic services that one expects like a TV and wi-fi/internet connectivity were missing.

Also, when we came back from dinner the entry gate was locked. This also, after we were specifically told that they would keep the gates open for us when we came back. It is a bit disconcerting when you are in the middle of nowhere in the night and the gates have been locked.

Overall, i would recommend that one to look at other options. For the money that one spends one can definitely find better options in Mysore. This is an option one should consider only if the prices are more reasonable.

Room Tip: - You need to tell them in the morning itself if you want to have dinner at their place - There is...
