I recently stayed at Chapslee with my girlfriend for our anniversary and it was the one of the most fantastic, unique places we have ever stayed at. This estate is a private home and a school, not your typical hotel.
We arrived on a Saturday morning and departed Sunday evening. There was some noise from the school on Saturday, but it was closed on Sunday, so we got to sleep in. It was so quiet at night that our ears were ringing (from the noise of Delhi and the train there).
We didn't eat there, but another guest was eating and the food looked and smelled delicious. We wished we had eaten there once.
They requested upfront payment via money transfer, which was odd, but given that they are not a big hotel, it is understandable. Don't worry, you won't be disappointed.
Get them to pick you up from the train (Best way to get to Shimla) in their fancy old car.
We found the place to be very safe. They have two "guard dogs" and the house boys sleep in the TV room.
Take a look at the photos for the full "experience".
I'll make a second review with more photos.

Thank you, Sir, for your very kind and complementary review of your stay at Chapslee in October, 2004. As you say, it is ‘an old Raj house and the rooms antiquated’, having been built in the 1830’s, though enlarged upon in 1900. Chapslee was purchased by my grandfather in 1938, even though the fixture and furnishings are much older, as they were brought from my grandfather’s other houses to furnish Chapslee and are ‘Victorian and Edwardian’ in style. Some of the object d’arts and fabric, both Indian and European, are centuries old.
The ‘two loving dogs’ are now five !!!
