Visitors to Shimla need to understand that the city is built on a mountain, that the main street--Mall Road--is closed to all vehicles, and that uphill climbs and long flights of steps are to be expected. This hotel is across the street from steps leading down to a parking lot, where porters are readily available to carry luggage up to the Mall Road hotel rooms. Like other hotels in this area, Sangeet has fairly steep steps--almost 3 U.S. flights lead to the reception area; rooms are on still higher floors.
Because TripAdvisor reviews were mixed, we called the hotel; Karan (Anupam Kapoor) promised us seniors a premium room on the second floor (two circular flights up from reception) and sent the hotel car to pick us up from the train station. Our room (#14) was large, clean, and comfortable with long windows overlooking a narrow balcony and the city. The bathroom was small but adequate with a geyser for hot water and a shower sandwiched between the toilet and wash basin. Service was excellent; all staff members were polite. We hired the hotel car and skillful driver, Parveen, for a day-long trip to Kufri, Fagu, and Chail.
Because other guests step onto the balcony for the view and because of its proximity to the stairway, guests who enjoy this room do not have privacy unless they close the curtains, but this was not a problem for us. Stairway and balcony walls are about 2-2 1/2 ft. high. The small dining area is on the reception floor; we had breakfast (eggs and toast) in our room but were away from the hotel at other meal times. The main section of the Mall is an uphill walk. Guests who can climb steps and enjoy walking will find Sangeet a good place to stay; we would stay here again.
