“A Real Home from Home with Kumar's 'Family'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2010

Our visit to India was the last leg of a round the world trip lasting 19 weeks. We wanted somewhere different from ther normal hotels and came accross the excellent reviews for Orchid Retreat by complete accident whilst looking through tripadvisor. To try to cut a long review short, Orchid Retreat, Mr Kumar and his 'family' are everything previous reviewers have said. The accommodation is basic but kept immaculately clean and tidy by Matty, and her omelettes and scrambled eggs are to die for. Mr Kumar and his erstwhile staff Anjelika and Raju, have a wealth of knowledge concerning the travel problems particular to India and are only concerned with what is best for their visitors. This involves organising all your travel needs for you if you wish. Raju was a great help and acted as our guide around the various areas of Delhi we wanted to see.

As we had been travelling for so long and eating out almost every night, it was lovely to be able to book our evening meals in the B&B and have some sort of homely comfort in a foreign land. It was also a great opportunity to have in depth chats with Mr Kumar on a wide variety of subjects over a couple of beers. We stayed initially for 3 nights before travelling on to Agra and Jaipur and then returning to Orchid Retreat for our last 3 nights. Each time we arrived very late at night but Matty was there to greet us and offer us refreshments and, as a previous reviewer said 'It was great to be back home'!
The only negative comments we have concern the location. The area is a little dirty and run down and there are no local facilities (bars/restaurants) without getting a taxi or tuk tuk (although these are plentiful and easy to get). Sleep quality can also be affected as there are alot of dogs in the aea and It is also close to a major flyover. However, we had a wonderful time at Mr Kumar'sand have no problem recommending it to other adventurous travellers. We certainly would not hesitate to stay here again if we ever return to Delhi.

“An very welcoming homestay that proved to be an oasis of calm in a chaotic city.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

We chose this homestay from excellent reviews on trip advisor and felt that our experience mirrored the reviews. From the moment we arrived in the homestay at 6am we were made to feel that nothing was too much trouble. Mr Koumar the owner offered good advice regarding local places of interest and beauty and recommendatons for places to eat without being overbearing. He showed genuine interest in his visitors enjoying their stay in his home and in Delhi. When my husband realised he had left his glasses in the taxi that had brought us to the homestay from the airport Mr Koumar rang the taxi company to ask if they had been handed in. Unfortunately they had not turned up but we were grateful for his help in this matter. He also rang a resturant to inform them that we were coming there to eat and requested our meals to be not too hot!! Mr Koumar also arranged for a taxi to take us to our next destination on the outskirts of Delhi. We found this most helpful
The breakfast is good with excellent scrambled eggs and an abundance of toast. The bedroom is comfortable and clean provided with a small fridge. The ensuite has a good shower and plenty of hot water. The only negative was the sound of dogs barking in the locality. However this did not cause us any major difficulty and it is India!!
We feel this is a quality residence that is very well run by someone who cares about his visitors and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here

“absolutely marvelous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2010

I could not have asked for a better hotel to stay at, I loved every minute of my stay. It was like a safe haven after touring. I left for 5 days and could'nt wait to get back for another 2 days. After a train trip to Amristar for 3 days it was a pleasure to return to my home away from home. Mr. Kumar and his staff were and are the most wonderful people I have ever met, very gracious and extremely hospitable. Stay and you will remember them the rest of your life. Mr. Kumar,Raj and staff I thank you very much. Jerry Hyer USA April 19,2010 Feel free to e-mail for more info. hyinski@comcast.net

“What a great find!”

In 10 visits to Delhi we have never experienced a level of service as high as that at Orchid Retreat. Mr Kumar is an exceptional host and his staff very competent and pleasant.
Our bedroom was spacious and well decorated; the bed-linen was first class and the towels soft and fluffy. The attached bathroom was well appointed and scrupulously clean. We appreciated the drying rack on our balcony for the days when we didn't use the reasonably priced laundry service.

Our bedroom was off a large lounge which was well decorated and maintained, and served both the guestrooms ( Yes, there are only two rooms available and this enables the staff to give the guests all the attention they could possibly need).

We were very pleased with our breakfasts - especially with the fresh fruit, omelets and excellent marmalade. We also chose to have dinner in several times. Mattie, the housekeeper, is an excellent cook and the food she serves is top notch and plentiful. The dinners, like everything associated with the guest house, were exceptional value for money.
We cannot speak highly enough of Mr Kumar. He is a font of information and help. His aim seems to be that his guests have the best time possible while under his roof.

The Orchid Retreat is not quite paradise - there are few places to walk in the immediate vicinity. However, Lodhi Gardens, Khan Market and Lajpat Nagar market are but a short autorickshaw / taxi away and, more importantly Raju, the general factotem, will find you an auto or taxi and negotiate a fair price (dealing with auto and taxi drivers in Delhi can be very stressful even for frequent visitors).
Another minor problem was that we were awakened a couple of nights by what sounded like two dogs singing to each other!
It has been our experience that the cost of hotels in Delhi has increased substantially over the last few years without a corresponding increase in service or quality and because of this we used tripadvisor to find a reasonable alternative. The reviews of the Orchid Retreat were so glowing that we were a little cynical, thinking Mr Kumar and his staff couldn't really be that good. Our cynicism was totally unjustified - they are that good.
