Our visit to India was the last leg of a round the world trip lasting 19 weeks. We wanted somewhere different from ther normal hotels and came accross the excellent reviews for Orchid Retreat by complete accident whilst looking through tripadvisor. To try to cut a long review short, Orchid Retreat, Mr Kumar and his 'family' are everything previous reviewers have said. The accommodation is basic but kept immaculately clean and tidy by Matty, and her omelettes and scrambled eggs are to die for. Mr Kumar and his erstwhile staff Anjelika and Raju, have a wealth of knowledge concerning the travel problems particular to India and are only concerned with what is best for their visitors. This involves organising all your travel needs for you if you wish. Raju was a great help and acted as our guide around the various areas of Delhi we wanted to see.
As we had been travelling for so long and eating out almost every night, it was lovely to be able to book our evening meals in the B&B and have some sort of homely comfort in a foreign land. It was also a great opportunity to have in depth chats with Mr Kumar on a wide variety of subjects over a couple of beers. We stayed initially for 3 nights before travelling on to Agra and Jaipur and then returning to Orchid Retreat for our last 3 nights. Each time we arrived very late at night but Matty was there to greet us and offer us refreshments and, as a previous reviewer said 'It was great to be back home'!
The only negative comments we have concern the location. The area is a little dirty and run down and there are no local facilities (bars/restaurants) without getting a taxi or tuk tuk (although these are plentiful and easy to get). Sleep quality can also be affected as there are alot of dogs in the aea and It is also close to a major flyover. However, we had a wonderful time at Mr Kumar'sand have no problem recommending it to other adventurous travellers. We certainly would not hesitate to stay here again if we ever return to Delhi.
