“Good value”

We left the Tara Palace this morning in the wee hours to take the train to Agra. A tout at the station instantly approached us and tried to convince us that we needed a different document for the train reservation. Because they were so helpful, I immediately thought to call Tara Palace to confirm the ticket problem. Our reservations were fine and we were being scammed. Long story short, the Tara Palace was a good value, clean and friendly.....and yes it is down an alley off of a busy Old Delhi street . The weather was cool so we didn't get to try the AC and we only had the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant. They have a very knowledgeable tour/ travel office for negotiating the numerous sight seeing options.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room and were given one at the end of the hall with a window and door to a litt...

“Grows on you...”

Stayed here for about 5 nights. I had originally booked three nights, but when my plans changed mid trip, I e mailed the hotel to extend my stay. They were very prompt in replying to my e mail, as they had been to all my initial e mails, which was very much appreciated...

Although their website says they only do free airport pickup at the international terminal, when I told them we were coming into the domestic terminal they did not for a second hesitate to agree to pick us up there. The driver was there to greet us, and the drive to the hotel went well. Nice to have a driver take you there the first time, as it is a little off the beaten track down a side alley...

Our room was disappointing at first, as it had only a smallish window looking out to an airshaft. We got over that soon enough, and enjoyed the peace and quiet that came with an "inside" room. The room was clean, and the bathroom nice. Hot water was always there once you had the front desk flip the switch for it...

The restaurant is on the hotel roof, but you don't eat there. The food is cooked there and you eat either in the dining room on the third floor, or in your room. You can ask to eat on the roof if you wish, and they will probably allow it. The food was pretty tasty, actually, and was all veg. No meat! We were able to get beer for dinner no problem, and it was cold and very tasty! The free breakfast is on the smallish side for a big westerner, but not a total waste of time...

WIFI in the lobby only for now, as well as a desktop unit. The lobby is very small but okay to surf in...

Every one of the staff were very friendly and helpful, but Chubby goes above and beyond the rest. If you need anything, ask for Chubby. Pay him for anything he may help you with that is out of the ordinary, as he is an ambitious guy that really wants to work hard and help the guests...

The Chadni Chowk area that this hotel is in is chaotic and alive! If you have a sense of adventure and want a real slice of what a big Indian city can offer, stay here. The area is blissful insanity, and has some great shops (a most amazing sweet shop 5 minutes from the hotel...begins with an H...on Chadni Chowk). Getting a tuk tuk to Cannaught is easy, but the metro has a station in Chadni Chowk...if you can find it!

“good rooms, safe, clean, great service”

I love the Tara Palace. I found this place almost by accident in June 2011, but now I won't stay anywhere else, and every time I stay there I'm again reminded of how much I like this place. Rooms are spacious and clean, with cool white marble floors and wood furnishings. Every room is equipped with television and a refrigerator, though the refrigerator shuts off with the rest of the electricity when you take your room key out with you (this is standard in mid-level hotels, I've found). Bed linens are spotless and replaced daily, and the bathrooms are well-maintained. Room service is cheap, and the hotel restaurant makes quite tasty, safe, basic indian, chinese and continental food to order, which arrives piping hot. The service at this hotel is excellent - attentive, courteous, and pro-active without being pushy. They won't bug you for tips, but I found myself wanting to tip everybody because of how well taken care of I felt.

The only down side to this place is that there is no wireless throughout the hotel, though there is free wireless in the lobby, as well as a computer with internet access.

Don't be freaked out by the hotel's location in an alley - it's quite a safe neighborhood, and the location is actually really great - walking distance to jama masjid, red fort, chandni chowk, and a host of attractions. It's also quite near the metro, from which you can get to the rest of delhi very cheaply. The free transfer from the airport is also quite handy!

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms advertise a balcony, but it doesn't have a great view and the balcony is tiny...

“Safe and clean”

I recently returned from India, and my first stay was at the Tara Palace. An added bonus for me was the free pick up from the airport. After a long flight from B.C. Canada it was great being picked up and not having to worry about getting to the hotel.
The staff were super kind and helpful. I was travelling with my daughter and we both felt safe and well taken care of.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, very safe and clean.

“Excellent value/Great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Right in the Old Cycle Market, if you want/like old markets in old cities, this is a great choice. We had read some reviews where people complained about having to walk down an alley to the hotel. It is very short - you can see the hotel from the entrance to the alley so unless you are hauling a lot of luggage, this really is not a problem.
The hotel is very close to the Red Fort; the Jama Masjid mosque and, of course, the myriad alleyways of the Old Delhi markets.
The hotel is clean, rooms are large and hot water was really hot and consistent - off hours, just ask them to turn on the boiler and they are happy to do so.
The restaurant has good food and breakfast is included in their room rate - choose the Indian unless you like cold toast.
There is a very helpful travel agent next door.
