“A delightful insight to the colonial lifestyle…”

We stayed at two of the bungalows: Tientsin and Castlereagh. Tientsin is very traditional and a little shabby chic; Castlereagh is more modern and recently refurbished. Food and service in both bungalows was exceptional and plentiful, without being over the top.
We preferred Tientsin, as it has far more character. Each room is very different – so check out the website before booking; and the location, high up in a tea plantation, provides peace and spectacular views. It also has much more space than Castlereagh, where rooms are noisy and samey; the views are limited to the reservoir below and the garden and swimming pool are much smaller.

Room Tip: All rooms are very different - so check the website before booking. The back rooms are quieter

“Great rooms, beautiful setting, food was ok, some help with activities would have been great.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

We spent two nights at Tientsen which is part of the Tea trails family. The house is lovely on a hill overlooking the tea plantations and a nice valley. The tea plantations are active and there are two well marked paths to walk out into the plantations. Children will come running up when they see you. They want to practice their English. Everyone working in the fields stopped to greet us and gave us great big Happy New Year handshakes and smiles. No one asked for hand outs. It was truly just friendliness which is really great.

We stayed in the Master's Suite which is a fair bit more expensive than the other rooms. Our room was enormous... to much space to even think of using. I would not spend the extra money to stay in that suite again... The other rooms looked lovely and for quite a bit less money.

The place is all inclusive including meals. I thought our meals were mediocre. They seem to alternate between western and sri lankan options... the Sri Lankan food was much better than the western food. I am not a big meat eater and ended up with a bowl of noodles and tomato sauce the first night (not exactly what I was expecting at a price point of nearly $1000 a night). They seemed surprised I didn't want beef... but I had informed them of this when i reserved.

The weather played a big part in our stay, unfortunately canceling our plans for Adam's Peak. The manager kept telling us we couldn't do our plans because of the weather, but he never offered other suggestions which was unfortunate.

The butler and house staff were fantastic. They always had a smile and were happy to bring us drinks anywhere on the property. Brought us our "bed tea" in the morning and even built us fires in the room each night. All with a smile and bow.

This place felt special, and with a bit of improvement to the food and some help from the management it would have been perfect.

“A hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2010

We stayed at Tientsin for a couple of days during our Sri Lanka tour but how we wish we could have stayed for longer. It is a beautiful country house set in the tranquillity of the remote tea plantations. Superbly managed by Damien who has a wonderful staff. Everything about the place was excellent (and I'm not one that is easily pleased !) The food, room, service, tennis court, swimming pool - all 5*. We shall certainly be back to this lovely hidden gem.

“Wonderful welcome at Tientsin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2008

We stayed in Tientsin Bungalow for one night on our way through the tea trails and what a wonderful night it was. We had a warm welcome from Damien the manager and were made to feel completely relaxed and at home, highly recommended.
