“Fantastic location fantastic staff and great food”

We had three nights recently at rainforest edge and loved it. the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to mkae our stay a memorable one. The food was Sri Lankan but really nice. If we requested something it was never too much trouble. The staff were helpful and very friendly. The views were stunning and it was great for getting to the rain forest. It is quiet but so relaxing.

“Almost heaven, but....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

On top of a hill close to the Sinharaja access road. Well-maintained rooms and nature pool, the 'shack' look is only an outside ecofriendly gimmick and does not represent the value. Friendly staff, though they have some difficulty understanding extra needs like lunch. Lovely balconies in the room and high-quality breakfast. Smaller and bigger limitations, though:
* Dinner solely rice & curry though of a high standard, and no laundry service
* Big limitation 1: access road is killingly bad for a 2 WD (we had to leave the car and walk for 200 m otherwise cannot pass the boulder humps), they should either invest for major repair or supply a safe parking spot downhill and a free 4WD jeep transfer service
* Big limitation 2: if you're on a tour with driver, he gets okay food but a totally horrible rat-infested bedroom in a hut. Force the hotel to get better acco, if needed a guesthouse nearby which THEY should pay as for the current price you deserve better/

Not really recommended for other travellers until they fix the limitations or drop the price.

“Nature lovers: this is for you!”

We stayed at this hotel for one night only and wish we could have stayed for more.
It is in a stunning location, right in the middle of the forest. When we satyed it was pouring, so the name "rain forest" was more than appropriate.
The rooms are very simple, with no frills but charming non the less.
The staff were the kindest we met on our 10 days tour.
Food wise - there is not much choice, but what we got was tasty and delicious.
They also have a spa which was under refurbishment during our stay, so I can't comment on that.
This is definitely the place for nature lovers, the views are superb!

“Staff needs Motivation...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2010

Well where do we begin...
We arrived to the hotel around 2pm, there is only, almost invisible, one road sign to this place, so if you are not careful you may end up driving back and forth looking for the exit.
Thanks to a few locals that pointed us in the right direction, we found the hotel.

The location is fantastic, the hotel is on top of a hill surrounded by tea. lovely view indeed.
We arrived and asked if we could have lunch, we were given a very annoyed "yes sorry" Which was very weird, (because we had been in contact with them over the phone along the way, and they knew we were coming) ANYWAYS, after my boyfriend convinced them to prepare something for us they prepared us some very very bad sandwiches. (what you must know is that there is NOTHING around here, no other hotels or restaurants, or not even any "shop" where you can go buy anything. so you are stuck here)
After the "snack" we went to our Room and it was beautiful. The rooms are much smaller than bouldergarden but fits in perfectly with the location. The bed was comfy, and everything was clean.
We had a lovely evening walk accompanied by the same staff person and another lovely english couple who was staying in the hotel.
on our return we were told what time the dinner was at, but of course there is no Menu here so you cant choose, you have to eat whatever they give you. another bummer. but luckily the dinner was not bad.
Next day we woke up early morning and head out to Sinharaja with packed breakfast (same horrible sandwiches... yuk. lol) and then back for lunch, but late as usual and we had such a hard time convincing them to prepare something for us because they kept insisting that it was too late for lunch and we should've come back earlier from the forest or at least called them and notified first.
Seriously, the more we spoke to them the more we realized these people really didnt want to work, we had a hard time convincing them to prepare us whatever they had.. and after 30minutes they showed up with some awesome rice and curry. We were pleased and pissed off at the same time.

oh and one more thing, only those who really love the "upclose and personal" contact with nature can stay here. if you are afraid of being awaken in the night by the sounds of night "Critters" then stay away from this place.
(if you want details, pm me)

Anyways, conclusion is, the hotel is beautiful, the location is fantastic, very close to the Sinharaja Rainforest than the Boulder Garden, but very very poor service. the staff has lost their will to work and motivation.
But if you really really want to stay here anyway, then make is just for one night only.

“Good place to stay for Sinharaja rainforest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2009

Rainforest edge is an ideal hotel for access to the sinharaja rainforest. The hotel itself is great for a couple of nights only as there is nothing to do in the evenings. It is very clean and the rooms are quite quirky with a' flintstones' type feel. The pool looks very nice but didnt get time to try it out. The staff are all very friendly. There is no bar ( only lion beer) and the food is all Sri lankan, but very good. N.b A very rough road to get to the hotel !!!
