“Lovely location by the beach but very run down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We were given a beach front villa which was fantastic but once inside the room, the bathroom was open - which was a bit of a shock to us. The villa had it's own swimming pool which was quite appealing but one look at all the worms in the pool was enough to put any one off from stepping inside the pool.

The air con was leaking and was quickly fixed by the hotel maintenance but the way he moved the unit on the wall made me wonder if the unit will hold on through the night. We ordered room service for dinner as we were too tired to go to the restaurant. The food portion was very good but the room did not have an opener to open our drinks and by the time the waiter returned, we finished our meal.

Breakfast was very disappointing too with not much choice. The location of this hotel is fabulous but the hotel needs good investment and management to turn it around.

“Old 2* hotel with Average food quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

The hotel is old, needs to be renovated and get rid of the flies & mosquitoes from the villas. Pillowes need to be replaced as they smell of sweat and odor. The TV didn't work due to no satellite signals and the safe was out of order too. The hotel garden is beautiful with lush greens and staff spend more time in the upkeep of the garden vs maintaining the rooms.

We stayed for one day on the 29th of Dec and for dinner were served a vegetarian buffet and had some beef (with more fat pices) and chicken stripes as a stir fry. Even for breakfest the the selection was very poor. The foot massage at the hotel was excellent and would recommend this to every one at a cost of US$10.0

Overall the staff at the front desk and at the restaurant are pleasant and helpful. We would rate this hotel as a 2* resort

“Mismanaged”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

When we arrived despite booking four months in advance, our booking was not there. We sent e-mail 15 days prior to our arirval to Hotle directly and still room was not available. They put us in other ordinary hotel and offer Free Dinner. When we arrievd at Hotle looking at Security Guards at gate, big security walls and jsut adjourned to railway line, we noticed something was wrong as why not only this hotel but hotel's next to it also big security and while having breakfast, we heard many were complaining about the train noise. Not safe to walk outsdie the hotel. It's like a Hotel in a jail

“Smth between 3-4 stars, ok, but not more.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

The hotel is very green, a lot of palms on the territory, also a lot of animals - big varans and small lizards, small creatures smth between squirrels and chipmunk, a lot of birds. But also beware of insects - cockroaches can be found un the cupboards, also small ants, flies are everywhere (a common problem on Sri Lanka), you cannot eat in the daytime without ventilator, they will eat you lunch:-). Some mosquitos also - but not that agressive as flies.

They have an open tennis court and for a small pay they will give you rockets and balls. It's not "right' court, but you can play ok, we enjoyed.

Hotel has about 50 rooms and several mini-villas. The rooms are ok, cleaning is very good.
the breakfast is a bit poor, practically no cheese. Dinner is ok, but the most tasty things are very hot and spicy. Meat is not very good, hard to chew, seafood is rare. Some fruits but not big variety.

The personnel is nice, but be prepared that Hibiscus is often overbooked and they can send you for a day or two to a similar hotel, also, as I heard they have problems with rooms for 3 with extra bed, because of overbooking also.

The wine in the hotel is extremely expensive, better buy in duty-free. Local rum is okay, they don't know how to make cocktails, but Cubalibre is quite decent and cheap. Beer I didn't like, but all the tourists drink.

“Pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We went to Sri-Lanka in the end of september 2011 and stayed in Hibiskus for almost 2 weeks. The hotel isn't new but nevertheless it looks neat and nice, a lot of trees and palms, everything looks so green. There are a lot of chipmunks and we fed them with cashew nuts everyday). Furniture and designs of alll the rooms are not up-to-date but everything is tidy and is cleaned very well on the daily basis. Food was different and delicious, every night there are different singers and bands playing live music.
What is for sightseeings, we didn't go to excursions with our hotel guide (though we only saw him once when he took us to our hotel), we went to 2 day tour to Kandy/Sigiriya with the beach boy Dammika. He speaks English, German and some Russian. His prices are very reasonable and it cost us much more cheaper to go with him though there were only two of us and we felt so much comfortable because we didn't depend on anyone but ourselves, he provided a large comfortable car. This excursion was very good and interesting, we rode elephant, went to the elephant orphanage where we saw elephants took baths, went to the tea factory, botanical garden, Kandy dancing, a lot of buddhist temples...I wouldn't even remember everything we saw. Also the hotel in Kandy we stayed was very nice one, it was one of family owned small mountain hotels. I would highly recommend to visit Kandy and Sigiriya, it's unforgettable experience and it's a very good opportunity to see the real Sri-Lanka. The only problem we had was to withdraw money from the local ATMs so try to take more cash with you. The problem was that we didn't had enough cash to pay for our trip to Damikka, we were very nervous because the next day after the trip was our last and we had to get money to pay for excursion. So Damikka took us to Colombo where we called our bank and got the money. Also in the first week of our vacation he took us to Colombo where we spent the whole day doing shopping and it cost only 3500 ruppees (like 30 $) while hotel guide will sell you such service for 70 or 80 $. So we would strongly recommend to meet Damikka at the hotel beach and go with him to trips. We liked Sri-Lanka very much and Hibiskus hotel made our vacation pleasant too.
