“Good... but not WOW”

We spent the last week end (3rd to the 5th Feb 2012) at Royal Palms on HB basis. The hotel was claimed to be full (may be due to the fact that is was the season in Sri Lanka). The room was fairly large in size with a personal patio with a view of the pool/sea. It had the basic amenities that is required of that paricular star class. However, I think that the hotel requires refurbishing and a facelift as several areas were noted that showed wear-off (door frames/toliet seats, bath tub etc)
The food was average, although the Italian buffet was done up well, the breakfast was average.
The usual Saturday night Disco was not 'ON' and was dissapointing!
I was surprised that the car was washed on the day of our departure and is a good addition, that the hotel management should continue.

“Overall a very nice hotel worth checkingout”

Stayed here in Dec for a couple of nights with my wife. Wasn't sure what to expect as I was going by a couple of pics that I saw through a friends FB. The hotel has an older charm to it, but very nicely decorated and very expansive grounds to wonder around in. There is another hotel right next door(can't remember the name) owned by the same group so you can wonder next door without jumping a fence.

Didn't feel the need to leave the hotel grounds as the hotel is large enough to enjoy. The room we had was nice and large it was just a standard room. Bathroom was clean and nice enough.

Nice lounge, bar to enjoy in the evening. There is a club here as well if you want to have a boogie. Unfortunately we were there on a Mon, Tues night and the club only opens Wed, Fri and Sat if I remember right.

I used the gym at this hotel which was amazing to start with. It was quite basic, but had enough equipment to get a workout.

Overall I would recommend this hotel as it's good value and a nice place to relax and unwind.

Room Tip: Not sure if all the rooms face the beach, but it's nice to have one that does so ask for one whe...

“Royal Palms Beach Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Palms during June 2011, and we had an absolute wonderful time. The hotel is clean, well managed with friendly and attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was plentiful and excellent. We normally prefer to travel and explore, but this time it suited us to stay on the resort most of the stay. If anyone is seeking a chilled out time during June, book yourself this hotel, we highly recommend it. Special thanks to the food manager who made sure there was always a good choice of vegetarian dishes for my wife!

Room Tip: Go for first and second floors for balcony and sea views.

“One week stay in January 2012, very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We booked the hotel for four seniors directly with Tangerine Tours and arrived after touring the island for one week. Our initial impressions were good and this did not change over the seven days. We booked half board, and although we had the option to change to all inclusive, we stayed on HB as we did not really need the lunch option. The rooms were definitely up to 4 star, the outside facilities and pool were very good and we thought that the restaurant food was excellent with a huge amount of choice. The hotel was right on the beach, the sea was quite aggressive so not for the faint hearted, but we found it challenging and were swimming at least once a day. Drink prices were quite expensive, equivalent to uk prices, wine selection was international. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the entertainment was high class, much more so than some we experienced elsewhere on the island. I think I can speak for all four of us and say we would book again at Royal Palms, although if you wanted a sheltered sea aspect you would need to look elsewhere

Room Tip: Choose a room on the first or second floor, fairly close to the reception area

“Not bad but not that good either”

Stayed here for 10 nights in September via Mercury Direct. Dated but still beautiful - large beds and a very large lizzard in the hotel grounds - minus half a tail.
The sea here is very angry and the hawkers are always a pain everywhere you go.
My main problems with this hotel are :-
1) Breakfast is only half-cooked by non-chefs and the poor quality food, at that
2) Any excuse not to serve alcohol such as something to do with the moon, any relgious festivals, international temperance day or just make it up as you go along day
3)Closing of bars with little notice due to a pre-booked wedding or something
4)No privacy in room due to the water man, cleaner, mosquito man and other assorted people just wandering in at all times regardless as to the Do Not Disturb sign on the door.
5) Lunch and dinner staff can be very rude and seem to be obsessed by your room number
6) All inculsive customers have to sign for every drink they have regarless as to the band around their wrist -why?
Some of the food in this hotel is superb but the rest is average.
But it's still a very nice hotel. _
