“The Best Kept Secret of Peru”

I have lived in Huaraz for 6 months now, and I heard tons of amazing stories from travelers coming down out of the mountains raving about this oasis of a lodge above Yungay. I decided to set aside a weekend during the low season and go check it out.

It is a bit difficult to get there if you don't know where you are going, but that is why it is so amazing. The directions on the website are extremely clear, and even includes a portion in Spanish to give to your taxi driver. I decided to take the economic route, which is 5 soles for a combi from Huaraz, then you can walk to the lodge in a few hours. As it was threating rain, I hired a taxi for 30 to go up, which is pretty normal. You can also schedule a time and rate to go back down (if you want the same driver) before he leaves, but don't be 100% certain he will come when you need. The lodge can always get one if you need.

The rooms and dining area are something out of this world, even though the top of the main building is still a work in progress. You will not be starved for comfort, that is for sure. The food is delicious and plentiful, and wholly included with your room. They will even pack you a sack lunch to take with you on your hike if you ask, for no extra charge! You can also save some green by camping if you want, and only paying for food. The whole place runs on solar power and batteries (you are in the Andes, don't forget!), so charge your camera and iPod before leaving Lima or Huaraz. You will get just a few hours of electrons at night around dinner.

The real reason you want to go here is the location. Not only the views and activities at the lodge, but you can literally walk right up to 15,000 ft asl from your bed. And the day treks aren't hard. I am quite out of shape, and was able to make it up most trails in only 4 hours. There are few you might have to get another taxi for, but it is quite cheaper than getting it from Yungay. You will also have to pay a park entrance fee for every day you decide to go through the Parque Huascaran gates (5 soles). For a list of the best hikes, consult the website which has a great guide, but make sure you do the Lake 69 route!

Don't worry about the weather, just plan for it. I went in October, and the first day was absolutely gorgeous. Only a late thunderstorm, and plenty of views of the mountains. I got a late start the second day (dang those comfortable beds!), and although it rained on me and I didn't get a lot of good views of the peaks, the treks and sights were still amazing. If you are looking up the whole time, you will miss the beauty around you.

You don't come to the Cordillera Blanca to stay in a town like Huaraz. You come to enjoy the mountains and everything they have to offer. This is the best place to stay if you want the whole experience, and no regrets. Take the plunge, and thank me after you do!

Room Tip: If you want a room with a balcony that overlooks the Cordillera Blanca, go for the highest price roo...

“Moonshadow over Huascaron”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Here is somewhere very special: it's a gem awaiting to be discovered even though many many people have stayed here and slept in the rarified air just below Huandoy (view from the unique roundhouse loo) and Huascaron (Moonrise and Moonshadow) ... The trick is following the instructions and finding out how to arrive ..... (by foot .... It's cheating to take a taxi!) Charlie Good, the owner is creating his own eco-sphere within and with the local sechia communities, and you will experience and feel eco-in-action when you stay there. The accomodation is from simple camping to super-duvet-warmth Roundhouse basic to LEDlit luxury ensuites ... and all at Peruvian hostel prices. The food (cooked by Tito) is Tito-International or Peruvian-Universal: BRILLIANT: Only problem that there is too much .... (and there are no marmots in Peru to gobble up the leftovers !!! --- Apparently loss of appetite is an altitude thing.) Day treks from here are numerous. Serious treks/climbs etc can be arranged. If you are any form of mountaineer and gourmand then here is the place in the Cordiliara Blanca from a simple walk to Lago 69 to doing Huascaron Direct.

Llanganaco Lodge is magic for those who either want to touch on the real Andes or want to get in, get up and go do things from the Santa Cruz trek + climb Pisco ... or go further and perhaps even touch the void.

Room Tip: West facing rooms: so that you can experience moonrise over Huascaron

“A holiday within a holiday”

Travelled for a month in Peru and saved the best until last - comfy beds, duvets, great food, cups of tea, amazing views, a range of hikes, welcoming and knowledgable host. Would definitely recommend.

“Off the Grid Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

We camped at Llaganuco for about a week and really enjoyed our stay. This place is a great way to get away from all the distractions of the city or life back home. No internet and electricity is only on from 6-9PM via generator.

The owner is super friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. There is excellent hiking and trekking all around the lodge. Our trip to Laguna 69 was a highlight.

If necessary you can eat all your meals at the lodge, we ate dinner a few times and each time was fantastic. Their website needs a little updating, some services no longer available such as mountain bikes and cross bows.

“UNREAL LOCATION, GREAT FOOD, KNOWLEDGEABLE HOST - HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TIME IN PERU”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

Besides Machu Picchu, this was the best part of our entire stay in Peru. The reason people travel to the Huaraz area is to experience the mountains and there is no better place to stay than the Llanganuco Lodge to do that. If you stay in Huaraz to acclimate and do day hikes you will waste many hours in back and forth transportation in crowded collectivos. We made a wise choice to stay up at this mountain lodge where we were much closer to going on a day hike to the beautiful Lake 69, we were able to acclimate better because we were sleeping at altitude, and the views of the summit were unparalleled. It is a good thing that they offer to provide meals because when you are up in the mountains you are nowhere near a restaurant, and you won’t want to leave once you are up here anyways. Just relax and enjoy the good food, being in the mountains, and having access to the park. Charlie the owner is passionate about providing a quality experience and he can provide you with great advice about nearby adventures. Take his advice about calling a taxi driver who knows where this place is, because it is a mountain retreat and part of the appeal is that it is ‘off the beaten path’. Our time there was the highlight of our stay in the Huaraz area. There is nothing near the lodge, so don't plan on doing anything outside of the lodge. However, the food is excellent, Charlie is an amicable host, and the lodge itself is very comfortable.

Seriously can't recommend it enough. We went out on a whim and ended up staying extra because it was so great. Perfect launching point for exploration into many different hikes. From the lodge you can usually just hike to the control point and then hitch a ride to your start points. Just make sure you set out early enough to get a ride in morning traffic. It may seem a little expensive compared to some hostels you can stay at, but all your meals are included (and very good!) and it is worth the splurge.

One final note - because the place is so remote they don't have regular internet. Try to contact them a few days ahead of time so you can coordinate everything. Calling from a pay phone may be your best bet.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a balcony, but the deluxe ones upstairs have a great view.
