I have lived in Huaraz for 6 months now, and I heard tons of amazing stories from travelers coming down out of the mountains raving about this oasis of a lodge above Yungay. I decided to set aside a weekend during the low season and go check it out.
It is a bit difficult to get there if you don't know where you are going, but that is why it is so amazing. The directions on the website are extremely clear, and even includes a portion in Spanish to give to your taxi driver. I decided to take the economic route, which is 5 soles for a combi from Huaraz, then you can walk to the lodge in a few hours. As it was threating rain, I hired a taxi for 30 to go up, which is pretty normal. You can also schedule a time and rate to go back down (if you want the same driver) before he leaves, but don't be 100% certain he will come when you need. The lodge can always get one if you need.
The rooms and dining area are something out of this world, even though the top of the main building is still a work in progress. You will not be starved for comfort, that is for sure. The food is delicious and plentiful, and wholly included with your room. They will even pack you a sack lunch to take with you on your hike if you ask, for no extra charge! You can also save some green by camping if you want, and only paying for food. The whole place runs on solar power and batteries (you are in the Andes, don't forget!), so charge your camera and iPod before leaving Lima or Huaraz. You will get just a few hours of electrons at night around dinner.
The real reason you want to go here is the location. Not only the views and activities at the lodge, but you can literally walk right up to 15,000 ft asl from your bed. And the day treks aren't hard. I am quite out of shape, and was able to make it up most trails in only 4 hours. There are few you might have to get another taxi for, but it is quite cheaper than getting it from Yungay. You will also have to pay a park entrance fee for every day you decide to go through the Parque Huascaran gates (5 soles). For a list of the best hikes, consult the website which has a great guide, but make sure you do the Lake 69 route!
Don't worry about the weather, just plan for it. I went in October, and the first day was absolutely gorgeous. Only a late thunderstorm, and plenty of views of the mountains. I got a late start the second day (dang those comfortable beds!), and although it rained on me and I didn't get a lot of good views of the peaks, the treks and sights were still amazing. If you are looking up the whole time, you will miss the beauty around you.
You don't come to the Cordillera Blanca to stay in a town like Huaraz. You come to enjoy the mountains and everything they have to offer. This is the best place to stay if you want the whole experience, and no regrets. Take the plunge, and thank me after you do!
