“Pampered”

My husband and I traveled to Macchu picchu for our 20th wedding anniversary and booked several nights at the Sumaq. We were definitely pampered during our stay... We had high tea each afternoon, and the meals at the hotel were phenomenal. Each meal was prepared with a gourmet's touch. The rooms were also very comfortable and roomy. Very helpful and professional who addresses each question we had. This was a luxurious treat after hiking the inca trail.

“Excellent, convenient choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The hotel is well-located, with the bus to Machu Picchu stopping just outside the door, the river running fast and beautiful across the street, and an easy walk to shopping and restaurants in town.

I had single accommodations, and my room was large and well-appointed. I had a view of the jungle rather than the river, but there are plenty of lovely places within the hotel to sit and look at the river.

The food was good. The toiletries were special.

I have not a single complaint.

“Nice Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We stayed at Sumaq one night before seeing Machu Picchu. Room on river has excellent view of the roaring river. We picked this hotel only because other nice hotels were already booked. After paying $450/night we didn't want to have to get two rooms for ourselves and our teenage daughters. They told us there was a two person max since our daughters were older than 12. We told them we would manage, and thankfully, they let us. To our delight, the room was huge, with plenty of room and the beds were queen size, so one night was no problem and worth it to stay in one room. Breakfast and dinner were included, although drinks at dinner were expensive. There was live music during dinner and that was a nice surprise. The spa was a disappointment, it was closed, except for getting my massage, the steam room was broken, and the massage was not worth it. I wonder if she even had any masseuse training. They did let me take a shower in there the next day after we had checked out, which was nice of them. A plus is that it is very close to the bus to Machu Picchu and they will hold a spot for you at whatever time you request, so you can sleep later. It is the only hotel that the bus stops if requested on the way to and from Machu Picchu. We got on the fourth bus up and passed the hotel at 5:45. It was nice to go to Machu Picchu early before the crowds. There isn't much of a sunrise at the top though. The hotel was clean and feels new. They give you a welcome drink when you arrive and free Pisco Sours at happy hour.

Room Tip: Get one on the river, we were on the third floor and it was quiet.

“The Best Choice in Aqua Calientes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The previous reviews are spot on. Service was perfect and the included dinner and breakfast were wonderful. The room was on the small size and nothing too special (except for the fabulous view of the flowing river out front), but perfectly comfortable. My wife injured her ankle while hiking at Machu Picchu and needed to be seen by a doctor at the hotel that evening and following morning. The hotel staff was very attentive and offered no resistance at all in granting us "as late as we needed" checkout. I would definitely recommend the Sumaq to other travelers.

“One of the best hotels I've ever stayed in!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Everything about this hotel is top notch! A porter greets you at the train station to take your bags to the hotel. After your afternoon at Machu Picchu, you return to a spacious room with comfortable and immaculate accommodations - and they make a special stop for Sumaq guests right at the door. The design and decor of the hotel is beautiful. There is a balcony accessible to all guests, which offers a pretty panoramic view of the town of Aguas Calientes. The included dinner was fantastic!! They also had musicians entertaining us during dinner. Breakfast was standard, but good. The next morning, they will arrange for the bus to pick you up right in front of the hotel - no need to walk into town. Lastly, they arrange for your bags to be taken directly to the train station - no need to make an extra stop at the hotel after your second day of touring Machu Picchu. Fantastic accommodations, fantastic food, fantastic service!
