For my last night in Ometepe i decided to go from other great hotels and hostels on ometepe to this. It looks nice from the outside, the bar area is very nice. but I arrived mid morning and was immediately attacked by mosquitos. something there must attract them as didnt have this issue anywhere else on the island. Saw the rooms and was dubious but thought i will give it a chance. The manager seemed very nice to begin with then went very strange talking about weird scientific rubbish that i was not at all interested in for about 15minutes without giving me a break. I managed to escape and went to the ´reserve´ in the back which is basically a disgrace, tying up monkeys for no reason. Fair enough the deers are breeding but monkeys looked like there was nothing wrong with them and they should be freed.
The dorm was dingy and damp feeling and the bathroom was an utter mess. the tap water flowed into the shower drain so you could stand remnants of toothpaste etc and there was a strong disgusting smell of urine which choked me. the shower was unpleasant in this environment. Clearly has not been cleaned in a while, oh and there was a tree coming in through the window. Beds were also very unimpressive.
I went back to the bar and tried to check my emails quietly, by the way you pay for WIFI $2 for 24 hours is so annoying when its free in other places. I got stuck listening to the old Indian/(not sure where he really is from)man who had stale beer breath and kept talking at me for about an hour. Luckily someone wanted a beer and i could run away. and thats what i did and as soon as the morning came, i paid and ran. Would never recommend this place.
Yes its cheap but its that cheap because they dont spend anything on the hostal upkeep.

Really, if you get to the island at a reasonable hour, you should head to Charco Verde, fincas near Balgue, or Hacienda Merida. If not, this is a perfect refuge. The old Indian who runs the place seems to speak every language without an accent and he gives excellent information about he island. The bar is good, the food both there and next door is wonderful, and the rooms are good for the price -- this is a pretty perfect hostel.

This hostel is very hippy, but does have a pretty cool vibe. I was travelling with two people I'd met recently and we opted for a private room, with bathroom for 7$ each. The dorms were pretty basic and we all had computers with us. (Wifi is $2 for 24 hours). The walls in our room were nicely painted and the drinks in the bar were pretty cheap.

The downfall of our stay at this hostel? They have two monkeys out back, a nice one and a mean one. While they have a sign that says, "Monkeys can bite" or something similar, they don't have a sign that says, "one of these monkeys used to be a ring-fighting monkey, and he WILL attack you if you are not its owner". Yes, that sounds harsh but thats what everyone staying at the hostel warned. My friend got to close to the mean monkey, yes it was her fault for getting too close, and it bit her.
While the monkey bite itself was not the hostels fault, they reacted as though it was nothing. They casually told our taxi driver to take her to the hospital. We are pretty chill people but his reaction was too non-chalant. She had to take anti-biotics, strong pain killers, get a tetanus booster shot, and her bite also got infected within 24 hours. The moral of the story, don't even go near the monkey. It seems a bit weird to put such an aggressive monkey in your place of business.

I stayed in this Hostel with 4 other friends. The prices are excellent, and the rooms were clean. The mattress was a bit hard, but thats how I like it. At the Hostel works a guy that is named Usaghi. He is a really friendly guy that also works as a guide. He took us all the way to the top of Volcan Concepcion. Amazing! He also cooks very well, and even made us hummus :)
