“Rude and not worth it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

I stayed here for 4 days in January. On arriving at reception the woman there basically told me off for arriving at that time because the people in my room wanted to stay an extra night and now they had to move their luggage. (Not sure why this was my fault but it appeared that it was). She told me to come back in 30 minutes. i did as i was told only to return and be blanked for 10 minutes then told to wait. Finally i got to my room, with the maids key as the other people also had a key to my room. Security was again an issue when my I phone was stolen, no one believed someone could go into my room so i must have left it on the breakfast table and a customer stolen it apparently. Either could have happened but no one cared that i can tell you.

If you are travelling solo i would avoid this place as all activities to places that the hotel organizes are for a minimum of 3 and if others have booked the rude receptionist will not add a solo person to the trip so unless you want to pay for 3 people you can not do any of the hotels trips....and since at this time of year their is no beach that is a problem, and since there is very little to do in Santo domingo i would recommend you stay in a different town.

The food in the restaurant is average and to get service requires some effort, the staff all seem to model themselves on the receptionist, ie, you seem to basically be in the way.

Also, as others have said, check your bill carefully. mine was way out as all my included breakfasts had been added to the bill as well. Pointing this out resulted in the person charging me getting very annoyed and angry (again you are in the way). Finally when rude receptionist informed her that the bill was wrong and the breakfasts needed to be removed she did. However, be aware, she removed the pre-tax breakfast costs from the post-tax total, thus leaving me still paying the taxes on the incorrectly billed invoice. Pointing this out resulted in 2 angry and annoyed people and the lady taking my money swearing about me in spanish to the rude receptionist. (yes i did understand what you said). oh also bugs, in your bed and all around and all over your food at the restaurant.

“Nice but could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2010

I'll start with the positives - my room was clean and spacious with a lovely hot shower; although others travelling in my group had cold showers. There was a nice patio area in front of the room with a table, chairs and hammock. The negatives - The place is supposed to have a beach but it had been washed away when we were there. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so you're pretty limited in terms of eating/nightlife. The restaurant at the hotel was pricey and the food was mediocre at best. The waiting staff were friendly but the reception staff were moody so much so that I gave up trying to pay after using the internet when the staff member blanked me and walked away from reception. Overall a satisfactory place to stay that could be made better with improved service and food.

“Great place to rest up after a long day of adventure”

This was our third trip to the Island of Ometepe and the one we´ve enjoyed the most. Hotel Villa Paraiso played an important part in making it a very enjoyable 4 day vacation. It´s situated at the perfect location on the island. Ometepe Island is probably one of the best kept secrets in the world! The volcanoes are awesome, the people are super friendly, the Ojo de Agua underground, spring fed, swimming hole is within walking distance from the hotel and all other attractions are available from the hotel site. From just across the street, our kids rode horses, rode bikes along the newly cobblestoned road and bike trails, and were transported to a lake to river kayaking site. The majority of the food at the hotel is very good and at fair prices. Fresh fruits for breakfast with yogurt was my wife´s favorite while the kids enjoyed the Nica typical breakfast. I had a delicious churrasco steak, seafood platter with a modest lobster tail, shrimp and fish fillet. Their broiled fish looks good and is super tasty. The hotel is right on the lake beach with plenty of special places to just hang out after a day of walking, rowing, riding and swimming. Hammocks, beach chairs, tables, are free to the guests. We were given a special price for a two bedroom cottage right next to the beach. Our cottage´s lakeview porch with a hammock, rocking chairs and even Betty the hotel dog, was perfect for an evening serenade with my guitar. The sound of crashing waves, the rushing wind and the swaying of palm trees off the monstrous lake entertained our sleep as we never used our A/C leaving the screened windows open all night. This place, as is most of the island, is very secure. As usual with Nicaraguan employees, they rarely volunteer any information, so you need to ask and they´ll respond. Once you strike up a conversation with them, they´re more than willing to serve you with the best! Nonetheless, the hotel owner lives across the street and is often on the hotel premises asking folks if they need anything; a very interesting couple: a Nicaraguan doctor and his Austrian wife. Great people! Room prices are a bit higher than the other hotels in the area, but again, this is about the most plushy hotel on Santo Domingo beach. It´s well worth the few extra bucks to stay at Villa Paraiso. I recommend the first two weeks of December when the weather is actually cool at nights and prices are also pre-seasonal. This could be a great place for a honeymoon or a family vacation! Enjoy!

“Over priced, not accomodating, needs TLC”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2010

OVERPRICED! Stayed 3 nights. Been there every year for the last 5 years. Have only stayed in the villas o cabanas. Would never stay in the rooms, too small, fans or AC too loud. The Staff used to be better. The blockouts are frequent, and if not for the villas where you can open the large front doors and let the fresh air in and hear the beautiful sound of the waves - now closer than ever because of the risen lake do to the heavy rains- it would be impossible to sleep. The AC when working is too loud. There were no mosquitos and the wind was constant, fresh, relaxing. To be fair, our stay was beautifully peacefull, and the view of the lake is awsome. Ometepe is just like that, AWSOME. If you decide to stay in this hotel make sure to go off season and work out a lower rate. Make sure to stay in the newer cabanas, with new AC .

“Unhealpful Staff and Overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

stayed 2 nights in our room #16. The front desk lady was very mean and unhealpful. The hotel shuttle is NOT free, they charge you 15 USD and it is not mentioned at the time of the reservation. Food is not good and is expensive, everything is in USD not Cordobas, but the restaurant staff is very nice and friendly, in specific Don Miguel. Power went out 3-4 BOTH nights after which they turned on the generators, but the generators dont power the AC. A lot of bugs and Geckos, but hey you're in NIcaragua, its expected. We rented out a couple of horses and bikes through the hotel, both at a good price. bikes-$2/1h horses-$5/1h+ guide.
All in all, the hotel is Overpriced (we payed $58/per night, SHOULD be $25-30 though) without very good results.

P.S. Check your bill at the end of the trip because the head desk tends to Overcharge your bill without you knowing, ours was by $12 but we caught it and brought it to their attention.

P.S.S. The owner ( An Austrian lady) lives on the property and is not at all friendly with her clientel.
