I think I can sum this up as the worst hotel I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed at some pretty bad places.) I decided to take a trip to Ometepe last minute and was worried about where to stay my second night before I got the ferry the next morning. On my way to Ometepe, I wasn't feeling very well and was cornered by some guys trying to get me to order a taxi for the island. I didn't need a taxi (and repeated this about 10 times), but commented that I needed a hotel room. I was a bit worried since I was a girl traveling by myself and I had trouble contacting hotels the day before. The guy ended up getting me a room by the ferry for $40, which was about $40 too much to pay, especially when Frommers was saying the top amount for rooms in the hotel was $25. I wasn't feeling well and temporarily forgot the fact that $40 was too much to pay for anything by the ferry. I was hoping the room would atleast be nice and make me feel better for paying so much. Obviously, that didn't happen.
Well, I got to the hotel late and was shown to my room. It was on the end of a long corridor of rooms away from the road. It was well lit in the hallway and there were hammocks hanging which was nice. I was a bit nervous because there was a courtyard at the end by my room which I couldn't tell if it was open to the public or shut off. It was very dark, not lit at all, and there had been a few random people walking through. The room was disgusting, with some ugly colored mural of circles painted on the walls and gross beds and sheets. I guess the only plus was that the room had AC, a tv and a fan, none of which I wanted to touch because the room felt muggy and filthy. I decided to leave and get dinner so I wouldn't have to spend much time in the room.
When I got back from dinner about 9 pm, there was absolutely nobody around and the hotel was completely dark. The whole place was completely open so anyone could walk in. It was so dark, I could barely find my way through the hallway to my room. Finally getting into my room and locking it as much as possible with the 3 locks on the door (2 of which didn't seem to be very secure to start.) I went to get ready for bed. I go to the bathroom and there was no toilet paper!! None.. Anywhere. I realized that there wasn't even a way to contact anyone to ask for some. I then got into bed and even though I didn't really want to touch it at all, I got under the sheet that was folded on the end of the bed. It was the only way to keep the mosquitos in the room from biting me through the night. I had been in Nicaragua for 10 days and this is the only place I was bitten. I tried to sleep but with the mosquitoes, not feeling secure whatsoever, and finally water seeping into the room from a torrential downpour throughout the night made it impossible. I literally sat in the dark and counted down the hours until I could leave. I wish I had taken pictures, but I wanted to forget this hotel as quickly as possible. The only other positive is that it's literally one block from the ferry, so I was able to get there in about 1 minute.
