The Sabah hotel purports to be a four star hotel - it was sadly lacking in a number of areas. The room smelt musty and damp and the towels were old, tired and thin as well as smelly! The furniture needs a good coat of paint, the lighting is poor and the bathroom was in a poor state. We had the tv and aircon on and put the kettle on and blew the fuses to our floor 3 times in one night and despite being given a new phone as it stopped working and offered a new kettle we decided not to try all 3 things again! There is a walk to the tennis courts down some wooden stairs across a river, it looks like the hotel will collapse down the hill any minute and the embankments are strewn with litter. Having said all that there isn't anywhere else to stay in Sandakan and the pool is great and the staff very friendly and extremely helpful. The food is not bad - the mixed grill banquet night was very popular with many locals dining in. We stopped by to watch the D'Lovidas the resident duo one night and were amazed when prostitutes walked in to meet their elderly clients. The next day the Governor of Sabah came to visit for 2 nights and the place was overrun with soldiers, security guards and police (I did say there is nowhere better in Sandakan to stay). I made the mistake of booking 5 days in Sandakan in to our schedule but we could easily have done everthing in 2. The hotel will organise for a local travel agent to visit to arrange day trips (there are no tour buses here), but they come at a cost and its best to book before you leave - we couldn't get to Turtle Island as it was booked out for weeks ahead.
