“Excellent wildlife, average lodge”

We were here for two nights as part of a tour. It was a base for a number of river cruises to spot wildlife. We saw a lot of wildlife including pygmy elephants and wild orangutan. The lodge itself is ok, but there one particular odd and off-putting element. We were there on new years eve...they got the Karaoke out and we had some laughs.

We stayed here for one night as part of a pre-organised trip with a local guide (Mr Aji - good on birds, average on everything else).

The location is the best reason to stay here; in the jungle, next to the river, easy access to the real wildlife. It has the feeling of a frontline lodge with the inessant chatter of exotic animals and birds, communal dining, monitor lizards and wild boar roaming the grounds and bedraggled twitchers swapping stories and comparing lenses. Staff are friendly, the beer is cold, the rooms are basic, clean and cheap and the location is ideal!

“Great location but basic place”

Kinabatangan Jungle Camp is perfectly located on the Kinabtangan river (as other lodges in the area), but the rooms are very basic, almost severe. Overall, the camp gives a feeling of "laissez aller" : the path from the river was made of raw wood panels, do-it-yourself material was there a bit everywhere, the jetty was full of staff clothes drying,... The good news is that people here are really fond of nature and wildlife and you avoid mass turism of other lodges. But overall, too expensive for the value it's offering

“Don't get ripped off!”

I, a solo traveller, tried to book a 3d/2n jungle experience based on TA recommendations. Despite not being full, the owners tried to double charge me for a room as I was travelling alone. I was very disappointed and had no difficulties getting accommodation elsewhere.

“Great wildlife but not a great hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2010

If you are looking for wildlife the Kinabatangan River is a great place to go. If you are an avid birder Robert is well known and great to go out with.

The camp is not great. There is no charm and is very basic. The staff all have their cell phones and they ring all the time. They give you three meals a day but that is it, there is no other food even to purchase and it is a very long time between meals. The guides are good but not great. They were also very hard to get a hold of, took me over a month to book the stay.

Two nights is enough and well worth it to go to the area but i would look into one of the many other hotels along the river.
