“Quaint but in need of TLC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My wife and I drove from KL to the Smokehouse, having booked the hotel based largely on reviews here. We found it pretty much as described by other reviewers - quaint and homely, but in need of much TLC particularly to the actual building.

We started off our visit with the famous cream tea, which we enjoyed and I guess it would be churlish to suggest they should have clotted cream in Fraser's Hill! Dinner was, as others have noted, relatively expensive but actually quite good.

Service throughout was pleasant and attentive, we chatted to the helpful manager on several occasions, and he was happy to talk about the history of the place and made us feel welcome.

Our bedroom was Halcyon 6, on the ground floor. We could hear the people above us, not just moving around but talking - so if that's an issue maybe you should book an upstairs room. Our room was cosy but definitely in need of a refurb. Our shower was hot and strong, although both the shower taps were marked "cold" so a certain amount of trial and error was required!

We walked a couple of the well-marked trails, all the trails have a description at the entrance advising the difficulty etc. of the walk so you can pick ones to suit your stamina. The hotel has a map and before we set out the manager advised us which walks he recommended and marked them on the map.

All in all a pleasant getaway for 1-2 days (no more), and we will certainly return to the Smokehouse!

“A very charming place and.. close to home!”

Our stay at The Smokehouse was indeed a nice experience. We stayed at The Ashley Room, perhaps one of the nicest rooms at The Smokehouse. This hotel is filled with history. We were impressed with details of the decor in each living rooms. At a glance, it was English but when we investigated, the fantastic decors were gifts from loyal guests not just from UK but from europe and around the world. The ambience was simply soothing. We liked our room -The Ashley very much. The weather was very wet, cold and windy when we were there. The temperature dropped quite a bit in the evening and the evening cold wind made our room too cold for comfort but.. our room has a functional fire place! Believe it or not, we got a kick out of keeping the fire alive, using rustic logs and old candles supplied by the housekeeping. Hehe..you don't get fireplace experience in Malaysia! The hotel manager Mr Khaw was a charmer, you feel at home with him, we felt that he added significantly to the nice experience with his impeccable hospitality. We can't say the same about the (non-malaysian) assistant manager who could not even smile when we checked-in and was very abrupt with the do's and don'ts at The Smokehouse. We found out that The Smokehouse was not at all as rigid as he made it. We had breakfast and dinners at this hotel. Overall the food was okay. Phone and internet transmission is very limited here. Something the management should improve on. It is okay not to have phones and tvs in the guest rooms (including in The Ashley) but wireless broadband internet connection should be made available. It is a neccesity in this modern era, it gives guests unlimited freedom to self-entertain without disturbing the privacy of others. The Smokehouse is usually crowded with people during afternoon tea, it is understandable; people come here to spend time with close friends over tea in a beautiful garden in a quiet place, great ambience..and it is close to home..about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. We will come back :)

Room Tip: Book the Ashley Room!

“The soothing charm of the olde worlde”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

There's nothing quite like The Smokehouse, and the normal rules don't apply. Ramshackle, somewhat run-down, with quixotic service and unpredictable plumbing, The Smokehouse is nevertheless charming. Its significantly due to the place's ye olde worlde ambience - one feels the cares of modernity slip away as one embraces the slower pace of yesteryear. It’s also the weather - delightfully cool & crisp, perfect for lolling around reading books.

The new manager in particular deserves kudos for his attentive & service-oriented approach. We should wish him every success; but hope they don't change the formula TOO much. Its fine just as it is.

It’s my third visit here and, while it is not particularly cheap and is somewhat scruffy, I'll be back. It’s like being welcomed back to one's country home.

“Very nice old fashioned hotel with fantastic gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

The Smokehouse hotel is a lovely old fashioned English country house style hotel in the Cameron Highlands. It has absolutely fantastic gardens which are lovely to sit and read or have a cream tea in with lots of beautiful colourful flowers and birds and butterflies.

We only stayed for one night at the Smokehouse, but we had a lovely time. We were able to check in several hours early to our room which was a nice bonus after a 3.5 hour taxi ride from Kuala Lumpur, then went off to walk some of the jungle trails. Luckily we set off fairly early as we ended up walking through the jungle for almost 4 hours! Even though the Cameron highlands are a lot cooler than the rest of Malaysia, they are pretty hot when you're doing a long walk in the sun!

We were pretty tired after our walk, so in the evening we had a few drinks and dinner in the hotel. The beef wellington (the hotel speciality) was fantastic, and it was nice to have some English style food mid holiday to remind us of home. The next day we visited the BOH tea plantations which are a good visit, although with a fairly scary mountain road to get there!

As the Smokehouse is famous for its cream teas we had one before we headed to Georgetown in Penang the next afternoon, which was very nice. A very pleasant way to end a nice stay.

The hotel is a bit twee, with old fashioned English and Irish music playing in the lounge and the same decor as an old fashioned English country pub, but to be honest that's part of the charm. This is a 1930s ex English colonial retreat in the highlands (and looks like one), which is the reason we chose to stay there. If you want a shiny new glass and steel 5* hotel, this probably isn't the place for you!

“Quaint, cute, worth a stay - but pricey for what you get”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011 via mobile

Stayed one night, had two rooms. One king size 4 poster, and the other with 2 single 4 posters.

Room look cute enough, but did smell musty. Bedding actually felt a little damp.

It does have very much the look and feel of an English country pub/guesthouse but is tired and in need of a bit of re-decoration.

The staff are helpful and courteous and made the stay a pleasurable one.

The food was a total let down. Whilst the meat for dinner was fantastic, the breakfast was truly awful with croissants as heavy as bricks!

It's not great value for money when comparing it to other places in Malaysia, but cut off in the hills there isn't much competition.

The roads up/down are long and winding and if you get car sick, this is not the place to visit.

I would recommend this place purely on it's charm and fantastic staff - just don't expect modern day standards.
