The Smokehouse hotel is a lovely old fashioned English country house style hotel in the Cameron Highlands. It has absolutely fantastic gardens which are lovely to sit and read or have a cream tea in with lots of beautiful colourful flowers and birds and butterflies.
We only stayed for one night at the Smokehouse, but we had a lovely time. We were able to check in several hours early to our room which was a nice bonus after a 3.5 hour taxi ride from Kuala Lumpur, then went off to walk some of the jungle trails. Luckily we set off fairly early as we ended up walking through the jungle for almost 4 hours! Even though the Cameron highlands are a lot cooler than the rest of Malaysia, they are pretty hot when you're doing a long walk in the sun!
We were pretty tired after our walk, so in the evening we had a few drinks and dinner in the hotel. The beef wellington (the hotel speciality) was fantastic, and it was nice to have some English style food mid holiday to remind us of home. The next day we visited the BOH tea plantations which are a good visit, although with a fairly scary mountain road to get there!
As the Smokehouse is famous for its cream teas we had one before we headed to Georgetown in Penang the next afternoon, which was very nice. A very pleasant way to end a nice stay.
The hotel is a bit twee, with old fashioned English and Irish music playing in the lounge and the same decor as an old fashioned English country pub, but to be honest that's part of the charm. This is a 1930s ex English colonial retreat in the highlands (and looks like one), which is the reason we chose to stay there. If you want a shiny new glass and steel 5* hotel, this probably isn't the place for you!
