“All we could say was "WOW" !!!”

My daughter and I stayed here during our 3 day safari in Tsavo East and West during January 2012. Our first sight of the magical Salt Lick Game Lodge was on a bend in the road on our way to it. All we could say was Wow! Nathan, our brilliant driver, stopped to let us have a look and take a photo. What a sight! Having read reviews on here we were so looking forward to our one night stay. Unique. It was designed by a woman – of course!
We quickly checked in to our room and then made a dash to the viewing area. Nothing. Never mind, we were in few a few treats later on after our game drive. Our room was really nice but we were disappointed to find that our window didn’t look out over the waterhole. It actually didn’t matter at all, because you can see animals from every viewpoint of the lodge, and we weren’t actually in our room very long anyway. We saw a few Waterbuck later when we got ready for bed. The bathroom was nice too, with those little extras like shampoo, shower gel and body crème. Good shower too.
After our game drive we returned to the viewing area outside the bar and saw literally hundreds of buffalo before us, some in the waterhole, some approaching it and some grazing on the plains. A magnificent sight. They eventually drifted off but then came along a herd of zebra. Wonderful!
The food and service at dinner was absolutely superb and we ate at a table overlooking the floodlit waterhole. We watched over the waterhole yet again after dinner. We slept very well in the comfortable beds surrounded by the mosquito nets. No sign of bugs anywhere here though. We were careful to make sure the bedroom window was shut. Didn’t want any unwanted visitors during the night. i.e. monkeys!
Breakfast was good (followed by watching elephant at the waterhole) the staff is excellent and staying here is such a treat. I’m actually envious of you who are now reading this review because I know what you have in store for you. Would love to go back one day.

“Still excellent after 19 years!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Travelled to Salt Lick in 1993 with my husband and I have just been back in 2011 with my son (16). Unfortunately after 3 days on safari in the Masia Mara my younger daughter just want'd to chill out at the hotel pool in Bambury so my husband stayed with her while I revisited Tsavo. The safari was a replica of the one we did 19 years ago. The whole experience was fantastic and allthough we did'nt see the number of animals we did at the Masia, Tsavo was an amazing trip. Salt Lick Lodge was like going back in time, it was still as exceptional as it was when I visited with my husband. The rooms, restaurant, staff and all public areas were very well maintained and the food was great. If you can't get up to the Masia you should do a safari to Salt Lick it is an amazing place to stay.

Room Tip: Can't remember the room number but we had one overlooking the watering hole and my son moved his...

“"Breathtaking!"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Salt Lick is an amazing experience, from the hidden serene bush location overlooking Taita Hills, unique design, the service to the game drives the 2 nights stay there was worthwhile and the staff are very welcoming. I would remain awake at night just watching the various animals come the watering hole!

Have never been so close to elephants and buffaloes! the cool tunnel and underground observation point makes it an experience i would love to have again and again and would recommend to anyone

“Magic place!”

Just back from a long safari and stayed one night in Salt Lick Game Lodge. The odd construction in the most unlikely environment was simply magic to my eyes. Stayed until late taking pictures from the veranda and went back there to see the sunrise. The views of the mist in the horizon, the elephants, buffalos all around, are simply fantastic. Very confortable accommodation, good food and service. People use flashes to take pictures of animals at night although there is a large sign right in front, in several languages, asking not to. Perhaps they cannot read...The sanctuary is very well preserved - animals seem very relaxed - and it is worth to pay a fee for the conservation of the sanctuary.Me and my Family highly recommend a visit!!

“Exceptional experience in a unique location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We are a Kenyan couple from Mombasa and we never thought that we would be so close to such an awesome, serene and relaxing experience. Salt Lick is located right inside the taita hills game reserve; the road from Voi town is however horrible, but the hotels makes it worth every single bit of rattle.
The room design creates a feel of real unique african experience; it is indeed the place to unwind and bring back that spark. During our three day stay, we viewed without struggle elephants (as close as 20 feet), dik dik, baboons, jackals, turtles, antelopes and gazelles. We would definitely return to savor the experience many more times.

Room Tip: Select rooms not facing the watering hole and not to the extreme end of the hotel; these give a fabu...
