The premises of Serena in Tsavo West are well developed with lots of greenery, which is the hallmark of Serena. We visited in Nov’11 and stayed for 2 nights. The welcome towels and drinks and the staff at the reception are the usual Serena standard i.e. very good. The rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained. There is a fan in the room and is quite helpful. An additional portable fan is definitely required if more than 2 persons are staying in a room since the extra bed is slightly away and it gets very very warm in Tsavo. The bedding is comfortable. Each room has a lovely sitting area outside- like a balcony, overlooking the bush and an artificial waterhole, where animals visit to drink but only during dry weather. The view from here as well as the dining area is nice especially of the blue mountains in the background. The food is quite good and maintains the standards set by Serena. Afternoon tea with hot snacks in the dining area is an added bonus. These are all the positives.
The lodge does not provide the privacy to individual rooms in the manner we have experienced in other Serenas such as Serengeti or Arusha or Mara or the Sweetwater tented camp in Mount Kenya. It’s more like a hostel. Place crawls with many types of lizards, though there were none in the room. It had rained (a welcome thunder after months of arid weather), in the afternoon and insects, especially beetles, were whizzing around us in the open dining area since they were attracted to the flood lights aimed at the waterhole. They were everywhere, on the table, glasses, cutlery and we had to shake some off our clothes! We could not enjoy our dinner hence. The staff serving our section of the dining gave preference and priority to the tables where high quantities of drinks were ordered and we felt neglected.
There's hardly any choice in Tsavo, hence you have to give in to Serena- the top rated property here.
