“Good choice..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

The premises of Serena in Tsavo West are well developed with lots of greenery, which is the hallmark of Serena. We visited in Nov’11 and stayed for 2 nights. The welcome towels and drinks and the staff at the reception are the usual Serena standard i.e. very good. The rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained. There is a fan in the room and is quite helpful. An additional portable fan is definitely required if more than 2 persons are staying in a room since the extra bed is slightly away and it gets very very warm in Tsavo. The bedding is comfortable. Each room has a lovely sitting area outside- like a balcony, overlooking the bush and an artificial waterhole, where animals visit to drink but only during dry weather. The view from here as well as the dining area is nice especially of the blue mountains in the background. The food is quite good and maintains the standards set by Serena. Afternoon tea with hot snacks in the dining area is an added bonus. These are all the positives.

The lodge does not provide the privacy to individual rooms in the manner we have experienced in other Serenas such as Serengeti or Arusha or Mara or the Sweetwater tented camp in Mount Kenya. It’s more like a hostel. Place crawls with many types of lizards, though there were none in the room. It had rained (a welcome thunder after months of arid weather), in the afternoon and insects, especially beetles, were whizzing around us in the open dining area since they were attracted to the flood lights aimed at the waterhole. They were everywhere, on the table, glasses, cutlery and we had to shake some off our clothes! We could not enjoy our dinner hence. The staff serving our section of the dining gave preference and priority to the tables where high quantities of drinks were ordered and we felt neglected.

There's hardly any choice in Tsavo, hence you have to give in to Serena- the top rated property here.

If it can get any better than this i would be amazed. From the minute we arrived we were treated like royalty.Brilliant staff, food, rooms only to be surpassed by the stunning views from the restaurant &bar.A pint of beer is £3 which a previous reviewer said was expensive,i would have paid double to have a drink in this setting.Already planning safari for next year &this lodge will be on top of our list.Thank you j t safaris(see separate review)&driver george for a brilliant trip

Room Tip: any room is pure class get up early &watch animals at water hole

“Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge Kenya”

We had the most wonderful experience on our wildlife safari in Kenya. After much research we decided to book our safari with a company called JT Safaris who are based in Mombasa. I was slightly concerned of booking and sending my deposit to a company in Mombasa which I knew nothing about other than other reviews on trip advisor, so many say they are the top safari operator in Mombasa I can assure they are not, we saw other companies using old camper van type vehicles with people crammed in and not being able to view the wildlife, and drivers not bothering to assist you in viewing the wild animals. I am so glad I asked for a private jeep for my family. Our driver from JT Safaris name was Mathias...he was a top safari man and could spot animals from a far distance. We saw elephants, zebra, lions and cubs, hyena, giraffe, jackal, wildebeest, hippos, impala etc, Mathias also taught us so much about the wildlife in Kenya and everyday life Africa. Everything that I requested via email to Julius Tact was taken care of from the meeting point, the time, the jeep and the driver. Our accommodation on our wildlife safari was faultless we loved every lodge that we stayed in for different reasons.
Thanks to JT Safaris and his team esp Mathias we booked another safari while we was still in Mombasa as we enjoyed it so much.. Would we return to Kenya-YES.. Would I book with JT Safaris again-YES..Would I say Julius Tact Safaris is a top safari operator-YES..Would I recommend a holiday in Mombasa-YES..
If you have any questions regarding your safari trip to Kenya or JT Safaris I will gladly help.

We stayed here on the 2nd night of our safari, this is a great hotel. Rooms are luxuriously appointed, food and service impeccable. The location is simply breathtaking, right in front of their own water hole. We watched zebras, impalas, monkeys and buffalo there and could hear lions roaring in the distance (the hotel will wake you up if they come to the hole during the night). Truly impressive.

“Staggering”

My daughter and I stayed here for our last night on a 3 day safari in Tsavo East and West. We certainly left the most luxurious lodge till last. After having read the reviews on here I thought we would be in for a treat. We certainly were.
The room was everything one could want. Wonderful views over the waterhole and mountains - and there were plenty of sockets to enable us to charge up all our camera batteries. Comfortable beds with mosquito nets and a fan that kept us cool all through the night. (Contrary to what a recent reviewer has written). Two sinks in the bathroom. Flannels too! The shower could have been slightly more powerful, but that’s my only (little) complaint. From our experience the lodge was bug free too.
The staff was excellent; the pool was sparkling and refreshing and the food, service and ambience second to none. The view over the waterhole from the bar and restaurant area was wonderful and there are animals aplenty. During our evening game drive we were lucky enough to see two lionesses with their cubs - and a leopard!
It’s no surprise that this place is ranked No 1 in Tsavo West. Ten out of ten. Would recommend you stay here!

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room which was fine, but by all accounts, rooms higher up have better views
