“Amazing view - nice lodge!”

I will never forget laying in bed, at dawn, looking out the window watching about 25 elephants drinking water from the pond below the lodge! Absolutley amazing view!!! The lodge suprised me with its nice (unexpectedly bugfree!!) colorful rooms, renovated bathrooms, good food and very nice, happy and helpful staff! We thoroughly enjoyd our safari in East Tsavo and its beautiful animals and nature!

“pleasant but tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

We stayed here as part of our safari. The view is awesome and undoubtedly the best thing about the place. The food was OK, with a reasonable choice in the buffet, but the meats were very tough, and the deserts largely inedible. The rooms were small, and lacked a balcony. the bathroom was not great. The staff were helpful and made an effort as we were there over Christmas. The lodge needs a serious renovation as it simply looks tired. I am sure there are other options if you need more creature comforts, but the view made staying there worthwhile...

“Dirt wastes the potential of this lodge”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We stayed here for our 2nd night as part of our Thomson's Kenyan Encounters safari. I didn't like this one at all. There was a cockroach in our bathroom and tons of big black beetles everywhere. They fly all over the corridors, bump into the wall and fall on the ground and there are so many that it's inevitable you'll get hit by at least one. The rooms aren't soundproof in the slightest so the soundtrack to our night was crashing buzzing beetles and people shrieking as they tried to make their way along the corridor.

The cockroach was really the nail on the coffin lid for this place for us. The annoying thing is that they've done the expensive bit of renovating the rooms-the bathrooms are lovely but they are very dirty! It would be a great place if it was just cleaned. The floor was evidently not even brushed before we entered and had 2 unidentified pills under the chair. There is a layer of dust on all the mirrors and evident scum on the shower screen showing they had not been wiped for a considerable time, it wasn't just that they'd missed bits on cleaning it for our arrival. I didn't feel the sheets on the bed were clean. You also only get 1 pillow each so take your inflatable pillow from the plane for a comfier sleep. Also, I wouldn't want my bare skin on those sheets so the inflatable pillows were very useful here! There is no fan in the rooms but you can ask at reception and they'll provide a desk fan.

Food was fine but I was a bit put off by this point! It is buffet style but it's kept badly lit so it doesn't attract flies. There was entertainment at dinner when we were there which was very good. We found that bottles of fizzy juice was 200ks each and water was 100ks. We didn't drink alcohol as that was quite expensive.

There is a swimming pool but it's not kept clean so we didn't swim.

The views are exceptional from this place. We woke up to see an elephant drinking at the watering hole which was an amazing site! It really is just frustrating as it is a brilliant location and the expensive bit of renovating is done it's just not cleaned properly. Total wasted potential.

“There are better Lodges in the area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

Having stayed in many Lodges in Kenya, and here in December 2011, I feel the reviews over rate Voi Lodge. I must remark on the vast quantity of insect life around during my visit as well as the indifferent food quality and the large size of the place that makes for an impresonal experience. Try the Salt Lick as a far superior and more unique option

“Fantastic view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

But the view was just about all that really impressed me with this place.

We were here for one night only, and when we first arrived we were really amazed with the wonderful view - that's a one off!

We were then warned about the baboons - and yes, REMEMBER TO LOCK YOUR WINDOW, they're everywhere. Another guest forgot to lock the window - and a few baboons had a good time in there!

The food was a buffe - but it was a bit hard to see what the food really looked like when you were there - and there is a lot of bugs in the air due to the surroundings, and that kindda took away my appetite. Not that they can do much about it - but combine it with the low light in the food area (properly not to attract more bugs) - it just didn't work for me.

In the rooms - it was really noise from the other rooms - and it just felt like it was time to give it a really nice refurbish - hey maybe just better locks on the windows would have made the stay more pleasant.

There's no A/C - but a fan. Not too bad - I mean after all you're in the middle of Africa - in the middle of nature!

The service people didn't seem to be enjoying themselves - this is the only place I went to where the waitress at lunch and the women who carried my luggage barely smiled!

The 3rd "dot" of this rating is due to the view - it's truly amazing.
