“Good choice for a stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

This is a reasonably nice lodge situated on a hillside at Lake Nakuru inside the National Park. Our room was modern but small, yet clean & comfortable. It was one of the highest up rooms and these appeared to be newer rooms. There was continuous electricity and hot water. However, if you have a problem with mobility it would be difficult for you to reach the room and there is no lake view from the room so no advantage for that. The restaurant was hectic for all meals and even though the food was tasty it was not a particularly pleasant place to be. For the dinner we had there we were asked by 4 different waiters for our drinks order! All meals here are buffet style. Sarova seem to have the same appetiser and dessert arrangement at all of their properties where you choose a small plate from a display cabinet of what you would like but they are all very small. I would prefer to choose a selection from the buffet. We enjoyed our one night here but it would have been pointless to have stayed any longer. Sarova is not up to the Serena standard but is probably the best bet near Lake Nakuru. The flamingos that sometimes completely cover the lake were absent when we visited apart from a dozen of them so for us this was just a stopover en route from Sweetwater’s to the Maasai Mara.

Room Tip: The rooms higher up on the hill appeared to be newer but were up an extremely steep path.

“The complete Kenyan experience!”

My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge and had the most wonderful time. The staff are very friendly and the entire experience was just wonderful. Our room was nice and by Kenyan standards very good with a large bathroom, safe and hair dryer. The bed also included a mosquito net.
The meals were most enjoyable, although the food may not be up to the standard of Europe, this was the best food we enjoyed in Africa. The dining room was lovely, befitting the environment and the service was exceptional. We also made use of the well priced and authentic gift shop. Wireless Internet in the middle of Africa was also very useful!
There were a few highlights.
The dance show each night was fantastic! We sat outside at the bar next to a campfire enjoying a cocktail (they make fantastic cocktails, the best piña colada I have ever had) enjoying a 30 minute dance show each night before dinner. It gave the lodge a great sense of community as most guests went to this and then onto dinner after that. Having said this it felt quite intimate and was lovely!
One other highlight was on our final night at dinner. The dance group, musician (who serenaded us every night at dinner) and staff danced and sang around the large dining room with a traditional Kenyan cake that eventually arrived at our table. It was a gift thanking us for staying 3 nights and wishing us a safe onward journey! It was the nicest touch and summed up this wonderful experience! If back at Lake Nakuru we would stay here again in a heart beat!

I also thoroughly recommend a visit to the Abadere Ranges Primary School. This was the highlight of our entire trip and an experience we will never forget. They are very welcoming of visitors and the children's smiles make it most worthwhile.

Finally, Twiga tours who we used in Kenya were amazing. Our guide, Stanley was fantastic!

“Great place with high standards”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We really enjoyed our stay here. The location right in Lake Nakuru National Park was lovely and very convenient for game drives. Check-in was efficient and a welcome glass of juice was provided. The staff was, consistently throughout our stay, incredibly friendly and helpful--constant greetings and smiles. People seemed to really care that the guests had positive experiences.

Our room was perhaps the weakest link--rather small, clean and reasonably attractive but nothing special. Our bathroom was spacious but could have used updating. However, it was perfectly comfortable. The shower had great water pressure and was situated in a large tub.

The common areas were pleasant--we had a drink outdoors at the bar while watching Kenyan dance being performed (a bit hokey, but oh well). The restaurant was not too overwhelmingly huge and didn't feel overcrowded while we were there. Food quality and preparation were very good; we enjoyed our meals (except for the roving singer, who was somewhat awkward).

Overall, this place was very nice and quiet. Sometimes it felt a bit out of the way compared to the bustling mega-lodges of the Masai Mara, but it was nice and peaceful, and a great base to see the park.

“Great Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My husband and Ipresently live in Kenya. We are from Switzerland though.
We had been travelling from Kenya to South Africa by car on a roof top tent and thus really have a lot to share.
Our most recent trip was to Lake Nakuru This is one of the smallest NP in Kenya, but indeed has probably the most games. We had been here in 2006 last time, and the Buffalo and Zebra population has tremendously increased. We were told there are now at least 50 lions in the park. We saw 8 in 2 days, on close range. The flamingos though have disappeared but the pellicans have dominated. In 2006, there were thousands of flamingos here..is it only the time of the year?

What I actually want to compare is Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge and Lake Nakuru Lodge as we stayed this time one night in each of these lodges.
Conclusion:
Pirce: Lion hill is USD40 approx. more expensive per night per room
Rooms: We favor the room we got in Lake Nakuru - had a better view and we could not hear the neighbor which was really a problem in Lion Hill.
Food: Lion Hill is definitely much better.
Both lodges have made a good maintainance for the last 6 years. However, Lion HIll is cleaner.
Overall: We would stay again in Lake Nakuru Lodge

Room Tip: We had the topmost room on the left far end from the reception (no. 52 -not sure) with a view to the...

Beautiful setting but peace and quiet depends on your neighbors.

Room Tip: Be prepared for a hike to your room
