“Surrounded by rice paddies and REAL thai food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2010

Great guesthouse! Simple pleasant rooms out in the country but walking distance to the magnificent ruins. Host English, wife (and cook) Thai. Asked for real thai food and got it - superb! (you can have western if you must). They grow all their own rice and herbs, some fruits and veges, own eggs, fish from the pond - yum! Amble around the roads watch the farmers work the fields and stock, buy supplies from village stalls and duck into world heritage sites as you go. I felt I was able to see some genuine rural Thailand. Rooms are not flash and not meant to be but are comfortable and adequate as long as you don't mind going to sleep with the Thai royal family looking down on your bed. There is a nice pool; and a spa to cool off in and bikes can be hired there. Good value for money.

“Lovely food & people, poor rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

Reading other reviews of this place I wonder if we were given the wrong room! I'll start with the good. Malcom and his wife were very welcoming and friendly. Malcolm seems to have mastered the role of barman and waiter - efficient, attentive and chatty but never intrusive. The food was mostly very good and was just like home-cooked Thai food. Breakfast was basic but I'm unable to fault it - just what we needed. Malcolm took us to the historical park and back, great service.
The Bad. The room was pretty awful. For a start it was by no means clean. If a room is clean I can forgive almost anything, but because it wasn't I started to pick holes in everything - uncomfortable bed, threadbare sheets and towels, broken reading light, chair with no light to read by.

I understand that the owners previously owned a restaurant in the town. They closed the place but have kept the menu going at the guest house. There would be nothing wrong with just having 12 dishes on the menu rather than the 100+ which they have (and one person to cook them)
The historical park is beautiful, and I would suggest spending a whole day there, starting as early as possible.
Really nice people at Mountain View but the rooms need serious attention.

“Really far from everything”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2010

Mountain View Guesthouse is really very far from Sukhothai, about 8 kilometers. Because you are so far away you have to rely on rides from the guesthouse and while they are willing and able to take you and pick you up,it makes you feel uncomfortable. Being so far from town you end up having to eat at the restaurant and it is really quite bad. More than once we had rotten vegetables in our food but had to grin and bear it cause we were stuck. I really don't recommend unless you have your own transport.

“Like staying with friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2010

We stayed here for two nights over our Thai vacation, and loved the homey feel of the Mountain View Guest House.
The service was really excellent and Malcom (the owner) is very pleasant and helpful. He knows a lot about the old city, and rents motorbikes and bikes at reasonable rates. The food is authentic (read spicy!) and delicious! We enjoyed both the restaurant, and the hotel pool.
The rooms are clean and come with dvd players. Our room had lots of books, dvds and also a well stocked mini-bar. The beds were a little on the old side, but in general, we thought the rooms were charming. We enjoyed sitting by the pool with a drink watching the sun set.
The hotel is away from town, so this is not the place to stay if you want vibrant nightlife, but we enjoyed the experience of staying in someone's home, and loved the quiet countryside.
