Cookies Salad was a great escape after the intense bustle of Bangkok. We felt like we had our own private beach oasis. We stayed in the room on the very top, right corner and it was just perfect. We had a beautiful view and a hammock to swing in while we weathered out the rain we had our first day there. The trek up to the top part of the hotel is pretty steep but it's not that bad. I recommend bringing a small flashlight in case you wander around at night as the pathway and stairs aren't very lit up. The restaurant had good food and there were some other nice options if you take a short walk down the beach. The staff were pretty friendly and helpful as far as getting rides places, etc. They picked us up from the ferry when we arrived and dropped us off as well, as it's pretty far north from where the ferry comes in. The setting is beautiful. There weren't many people there when we went (there were protests happening in Bangkok at the time) so the hotel was quiet and the pool area always had a chair, although their lounge chairs aren't very comfortable, so we'd usually go to the resort next door and lay on theirs with cushions! ha. I'm not sure if it would be different during a busier time. I wouldn't recommend staying in the room right over/next the pool (unless maybe you have kids in tow), as I think it would be pretty loud with people and kids splashing under you.
If you are feeling adventurous, ask some of the locals how to get to the bar up the hill behind the beach that is in a tree. We saw a local Thai band playing reggae and ska and it was the most fun night we had in Thailand!
If there were direct flights straight to Koh Phangan my house in the US, I would go back to this place in a heartbeat! (our train trek from Bangkok was quite the experience, you may want to inquire about flying if you're not up for the night train). It's a beautiful spot and perfect if you want to get away from it all!
