“The worst place we stayed in India”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2011

We really didn't like this place - can't believe its recommended by The Lonely Planet and The Rough Guide.
- They promise free pick-up - nobody picked us up however, and they didn't offer to pay our rickshaw fare.
- We had a booking for a standard room, but when we arrived that was no longer "available" - so they made us pay for a deluxe room with AC. Sounds like others have experienced the same scam.
-- We arrived at 8 p.m. after a long train-ride, but they offered us no food - and there a no other restaurants around.
- It was freezing cold (0 degrees Celsius), but thy didn't offer any extra blankets, heaters etc.
- The owner seems mostly concerned with earning money rather than giving a genuine service. We asked him to book us a train ticket at noon. Without asking he booked the ticket at 8.30 a.m. When we wanted them to cancel it, he made a big fuss so we ended up wasting our money.
- The food was awful. The only cook/driver/housekeeper seemed to be really overburdened.

“Great value and location for Bird park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2010

Tarun picked us up from the train station, which was good as we had around 50 locals standing around staring at us! My friend and I only paid 350 rupees per night - £4.86 approx, so great value compared with other places we had stayed which cost up to 4000Rs. Room was spacious and pretty clean, had to request towels and toilet paper. Asked for an extra sheet, which was not clean. Food was all very fresh, healthy and tasty - it took a little while to come as it was cooked from scratch. Tarun who runs the guest house with his brother is one of the parks naturalists and took us around the park on bikes, he is very knowledgable about the wildlife. Had to pay fee to enter the park, his fees and bike rental, so added up a bit. He was helpful about us catching buses to Fatephur Sikri and Agra for a daytrip, and the bus stup is 5 minutes walk away with regular buses.

“Good location and guide for exploring the park”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2009

We stayed here 2 nights (USD$25/night). We paid extra for the nicest room with AC. It was mostly clean, but had a few mosquitoes. The bathroom had a bathtub and handheld shower with hot water. We had to ask twice before they sent someone to the store to buy toilet paper. They must think us Westerners are crazy for expecting toilet paper in our hotel rooms. One of the brothers who runs the place is also a naturalist and was our guide at Kaleadeo National Park. He did a great job and we saw many neat birds and animals. They served food upon request which was tasty, but slow to come and rather small portions. The women of the house were rarely seen, but the brothers had a hired “working boy” to help them. He was 13 years old, illiterate and unable to speak any English. The brothers referred to him as the “lazy” boy and didn't treat him very well. It made us sad because he was nice to us, pointed out monkeys on the rooftop and seemed to just want to act like a kid. The room was mostly quiet except for nearby barking dogs. The location was very close to the park entrance. Overall, this room was slightly overpriced for what we got.

“Could do a lot better next time. they need to get their act together”

Booked Super Deluxe Room, their best, and arrived to find dirty sheets and duvet, no towels, no soap or toilet paper. Expressed suprise when we asked for clean sheets. When I booked their website showed rate as 600 Rs per night, but they wanted to charge 1000Rs. Had to insist they stuck to the quoted rate. Brother Arun an excellent and very knowledgeable guide for the wildlife reserve which was spectacular. Food simple vegetarian but well cooked. Would not stay there again.

“Comfortable base”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2008

Arrived here in February for a few days. The two brothers Arun and Tarun run this simple guesthouse. Arun picked us up from the station, which is a 2km ride, even though he was attending a wedding at the time. Rooms are of good size, comfortable and clean with showers . Food is Indian fare, mainly vegetarian, tasty and reliable and Asul is very prompt to serve at any time of day. Very worthwhile as there were no reliable restaurants as such in Bharatpur. We visited Agra by train (1 hour) and Fatepur Sikri by bus. We also visited the Keoladeo reserve under Tarun’s expert guidance. Much time can be spent on the balcony chatting with fellow travellers and our hosts who were on hand to advise in this very different country.

  • Liked — Friendliness and advice. walking to Keoladeo
  • Disliked — distance from train station. (allow 30mins)
