If there is one thing I've learnt during the course of several (work related) visits to Amritsar, it's that the people over there really enjoy food! So when one asks around for the definitive food experience and is overwhelmingly pointed to one destination "Bharwan da Dhaba", I'd say that it has to be a 'must try'.
Set at the edge of the chowk next to the Town Hall, in a fairly large, well lit, reasonably clean looking hall with simple furniture, Bharwan da Dhaba passes my primary test (appears hygienic enough). The attendant was quick to appear and take our orders from a rather limited vegetarian menu and equally quick to deliver the Amritsari aloo kulcha with channa and lassi and a side order of maa ki dal. Of course it was loaded desi ghee and butter, but thankfully less than I had expected and simply put, the food was fresh, well-balanced and very tasty! Initially appearing deceptively little in quantity, beware - it is a rather heavy meal!!
Although perhaps inspired by fast food take aways, the menu has diversified to include dosa, some sort of chinese and even a vegatable burger (with Coke!)!! I'd suggest you stick to the restaurant specials - kulcha, maa ki dal, channa and baingan ka bharta (didn't try this)
Sure, it's not the epitome of gourmet Indian cuisine, but definitely an excellent dhaba and when in Amritsar, worth a visit.
(Tip: The area, which is also close to the Golden Temple, seemed far less crowded in the evening than during the day. Kulchas however are meant to be breakfast fare! Personally however, I don't see how anyone can begin the day with such a heavy meal... :-))
