The food alone at Kaivalyam was worth the journey up from the backwaters! Certainly some of the best we had in Kerala. The location on the side of the hills next to the tea plantations is spectacular ( although may be a bit isolated for some - no other restaurants within easy walking distance). My wife enjoyed Harish's yoga classes in the morning in their beautiful open sided room overlooking the plantation. The retreat itself is comfortable and I'm sure that when the surrounding gardens develop the ambiance will be even more serene. A tip for Munnar - stay away from the normal tourist routes the Tuk-Tuk drivers take you on ! They were full of touts and mostly disappointing. One of my highlights in Kerala was an early morning walk down into the tea plantation area adjacent to the tea stalls on the main road. The workers begin work at 8am - you can follow them down into the hills below which is Spectacular - although access into to tea picking areas is off limits.
