“Amazing place for me and my family!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We stayed at the Sunset Villa 3A, a nice condo, a walk away from the beach. We found this place through Roatan life Vacation Rental. We are a young couple with 3 kids (7 and younger) and this house is what we wanted for ourselves. It is a little away from the main road, which gives you the quiet and solitude neccesary for a the night. It has all the commodities we wanted and the RLVR also offered us a housemaid which we didn´t find neccesary for us, but is available if you want. A must, is to rent a car, that way you can move to other parts of the island if you which to explore the beauties that Roatan has to offer and the different activities you may want to enjoy with your family (canopy :) ). Recomended highly for a family looking for a nice place (the house even has some games and a nintendo wii for the moments of leisure in the house) with not the high cost of other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Two rooms, both spectacular and comfortable. Also has available 2 sofa/bed which can the villa perfe...

“Better Options in West End”

The owners of Sunset Villas are so busy expanding it to become a mega-resort that they haven't bothered to finish or maintain the areas already there. After checking in with a surly receptionist, we were led to our room by going up some stairs and across a roof with metal rods sticking out of it (perhaps waiting for another level to be added?). The good reviews of Sunset in the guide books must refer to the condos/villas, because the hotel rooms are dismal. Yes, our room was large, had A/C and a flat-screen TV, and was situated on a very pretty terrace with a small wading pool. However, it smelled moldy, and the bed sheets were stained. The bathroom was dirty and the shower fixtures were falling off. The windows and door opened onto the terrace, so the curtains had to stay closed for any privacy. There were no bed-side lamps – just one overhead light with a switch on the other side of the room. And we would have been out of luck had we wanted to watch TV, as it was too small and far away to see. In short, this place is trying to look fancy by offering a few niceties without paying attention to the basics. It ends up feeling like a cheap motel with the façade of a resort. We left after one night, opting to forego the resort extras of AC and TV in favor of a good bed in a charming setting. (See our review of Villagio Verde.)

“Will be nice when finished”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2008

We stayed in the Sunset Villas community from 5/17-5/24. We rented a two bedroom villa from one of the property management companies on the island. It's a little confusing the way the place is set up as the owners of Sunset Villas own approx 10 motel type rooms and a condo that they rent out. They also manage several privately owned condos.

There is still lots of work going on around the pool area as well as lots of construction. Lots of wires dangling, workers around, and dust kicked up from all the construction vehicles. The pool was really nasty looking when we got there and they completely drained it on our 3rd day. It wasn't refilled to use before we left. There was a plunge pool upstairs from the main pool. It was kind of hard to use if anyone else was in it. Was mainly good for cooling off. For some reason the pump wasn't going on this pool so it started getting really green within a day or two.

We stayed at Mango House which was really nice. Our biggest problem was the doors had a large gap between them and evidently the sand flies found their way in. We were eaten alive the week we were there. Even when we went to the pool, which was set on the side of a hill approx. 3-4 stories up, you could actually see these things flying around. We looked pretty silly walking around with huge red spots all over us.

The pool is really big and quite nice. Lots of loungers and floats around to use. There is a pool bar/restaurant onsite now. The food was good and fairly reasonable. We ate here a few times but the selection is fairly limited. As with other places on the island there were lots of flies around the bar and dogs walking behind the counter. We thought this odd given the owners are Americans.

When you read about this being a gated community, don't let it fool you. The 'gate' consisted of a rope strung across the road and was down most of the time. There is a guy sitting there but didn't seem to be a problem for anyone that wanted in. From what we could tell none of the guards/security people could speak English. Not a big deal other than if there was a problem.

We dove with the dive shop that's just at the bottom of the hill. They are somehow affiliated with Sunset Villas and do give a 10% discount if you're staying there. I suggest emailing ahead of time for a price quote and taking it with you. I was quoted $250 for 10 tank dive plus getting 10% discount. When we got there they claimed it was $300 because their price had gone up. I really don't think that was true as they seemed to be really hungry for business. In the end he honored what he'd quoted by email and we were quite happy with the service. Make sure you wear repellant when going to the dive shop as the sand flies are even worse there since they're closer to the water.

Overall we had an enjoyable stay but wouldn't stay here again. It's not really close to walk to the beach, especially when it's hot. Plus there wasn't much of a beach area for us to use right there. At night when the power is out the whole place is pitch black. Makes it pretty hard to get back from the main road when you can't see where you're walking. Next time we will stay over on West Bay most likely just to try it out.

  • Liked — Great view.
  • Disliked — Too far from main area. Sand flies were awful.

We stayed in a two bedroom condo while there...Condo was roomy enough for two couples...the food was amazing but the hospitality of Pam and Dave was impeccible...We were made to feel right at home...If you are looking for hot weather, this is definitely the place to go. The guys at the dive shop on site were amazing (we are a little partial because one of the guys is Canadian).

“Loved West End - Some concerns about Sunset Villas”

West End was a great spot to holiday. Good restaurants -- great dive shops -- good beaches etc. We rented a two bedroom condo at Sunset Villas and were generally pleased with the accommodations. They were spacious, well-furnished with a great balcony.

There were however a few things that detracted from our stay. Sunset Villas is a short walk from the ocean and is still very much under construction. This meant a significant amount of noise and traffic right in front of the condo and around the pool area. The road through the complex is busy and noisy with traffic and trucks. We were also surprised that there was no cleaning service while we were staying there. Our interactions with the owners were hit and miss -- at times they were helpful, while at other times they were rude.

As an FYI to future visitors, most days there were 4-5 hour power outages to the island.
