We, Onay family of four from Wantage, near Oxford, UK, stayed in Apartment 1 from August 15th - 24th 2011.
We arrived very late at night, but could already see that the Apartment was pristine clean and welcoming. We couldn't believe our eyes when we woke up the next morning and found ourselves in a spacious apartment looking over the most enormous, cut-glass, picture-perfect lake we'd ever seen. The apartments are also situated in perhaps the most stunning area of the old town of Ohrid. They are a few steps away from the Sv Sofia church, and a very short and pleasant walk from the picturesque Sv Jovan church on the peninsula. We saw fish, water snakes, cormorants, seagulls and frogs at the lake side near the apartment.
On our first morning, Georgi and Rosana suggested a nearby restaurant to try, and we found the food both delicious and extremely cheap! We ate our second breakfast in the apartment, but soon realised that the deck area in front of the lake is the most beautiful place to sit, and so took all our 'at home' meals here. In fact, Macedonian food is delicious, the portions are extremely generous - beware!. And you may find that it is economical enough to eat out every day.
We enjoyed a fabulous, lazy holiday by the lake. The best times to swim, I think, are in the morning before 9, and in the evening, when to my tourist's eye, the wind is calmer again and the lake is flat. Rosana can definitely advise as she is a fantastic swimmer, and you will see many Ohrid locals swimming out to incredible distances across the lake. If you can watch the 30 km swimming race around one side of the lake, which takes place towards the end of August every year, it would be a great thing to see.
We were also lucky enough to arrive in Ohrid before the end of the Ohrid summer festival and went to a wonderful classical concert in the cathedral which seemed to cost very little.
Another cost, which in 2011, seemed very low was for taxis. We spent one day in the Galicia National Park just outside Ohrid. Our taxi driver was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. If petrol prices in Macedonia remain low, we recommend this as a great way of travelling out of Ohrid to see the nearby area. Also, (if like us, you don't already know) note that churches outside Ohrid will offer a cold drink, as in a cafe, but then will not expect any payment. We tried to give appropriate donations to the churches, but the generosity of people just a few kilometres outside the tourist centre of Ohrid was spectacular.
Georgi and Rosana can also suggest local boat captains to take you out on a tour to various places on the lake. We went to Kalista and Radozda on the opposite side of the lake, with Dragon, a name and personality we will all remember! We visited three cave churches, found a snake skin, saw some old-fashioned Macedonian houses, had a fantastic trout meal and then - well - the return trip back was a little bit more exciting than we expected, but the Rakia certainly soothed us!
They say that Lake Ohrid changes every time you look at it, and we certainly agree with that. It's beautiful, soothing, mysterious, fantastic - whatever you decide to make of it! My kids would recommend buying a small rubber dinghy and oars to appreciate it with. Try toy shops, but we wandered around for ages on that quest - certainly worth the effort though.
Dobar den. Have a great time!
