“Superb accomodation, great location - some minor concerns over service.”

We booked Villa Germanoff based on the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor - it did not disappoint!

Its location is superb, right in the heart of old-town, overlooking the lake. It's also hard to fault the value for money given the quality of the accommodation. The Piano Room was beautiful, the lake-facing terrace being particularly spectacular. I would definitely stay here again, and indeed intend to do so, because I enjoyed Ohrid so much.

My only concerns pertained to communication with the owner. Despite having sent a couple of emails in advance of arrival to advise our approx arrival time, nobody answered the door when we arrived. A phone-call to the owner soon resolved this (he was in Skopje) and his mother-in-law was drafted in to meet me. However, this resulted in a 15 min wait and expensive international roaming charges to get this sorted. Similarly when I wanted to check-out and pay the bill (they do not take credit cards) - I had to take the lead to arrange the meeting through ringing the owner. These are only minor issues, but for some people could tarnish their experience of an otherwise idyllic property and setting.

“Poor Business Owner. We didn't finish checking in.”

We booked this property on booking.com after reading reviews on tripadvisor.

When we arrived, the owner at first seemed surprised that we even had a reservation, but then made a joke out of it and said he was only kidding. He then walked us next door to another hotel, and inquired if there was a room for us. We had requested a room with two twin beds, and this room had one double bed, and the he argued the fact that we could sleep there anyway completely ignoring our request. Then criticised us by saying "when you book on these last minute web sites, you can't expect everything" or something very similar to that. Pure arrogance.

We booked based on the reviews of this property, and not to be relocated by the owner on arrival. I would pass on his bait and switch practices and book elsewhere.

We met someone in the parking lot who was renting out apartments. There are apartment owners everywhere ready to make a deal if you have the patience. We ended up with a 3 bedroom apartment with a kitchen, wireless internet, 3 tv's, and parking for less than $100 Euro a night, with a 2 minute walk to the lake. The rest of our stay was great!

Dear Sir / Madam,
This is really not fair. The guests (a young couple) have previously booked an apartment in our next door exclusive boutique hotel St. Sofia, but on arrival they insisted to stay in our VIP Piano Room (which was not available at all). Finally, they took the apartment, gave me their passports for registration and I paid the tourist tax. I also helped the guest (driving him with my own car all around the Old Town and paying his parking fee on the main square!) to bring his car on our parking place. Finally, after few hours (using the bed and toilet), they decided to go away!?!
I did not make any problem, I did not ask for any compensation in what so ever. After all, our guests satisfaction is my first and only mission. I always respect their final decision by all means.
But I really did not expect such a review. When you compare this with all other reviews, I am sure you will understand my reaction.
Yours truly,
Zoran Tuntev, Ph.D.

“The best place to stay in Ohrid”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and it was absolutely amazing. We had the Piano room and it was perfect. The hotel seems like an old house that was converted into a hotel and they have done a very good job of this. The room was very large as was the bathroom with a nice sized balcony overlooking the water. The room was cleaned every day with fresh treats left for us. The owners are absolutley fantastic and will go out of their way to help you and make you feel at home. Value for money you cannot beat this place.

Ohrid is a beautiful city and well worth a look in. Is it quite cheap too. Spend an afternoon sitting by the lake at one of the bars further away from the centre. Great & cheap!

“Best stay ever”

Villa Germanoff provides high quality service at very very reasonable prices. We paid 12,5 euros per night (per person) for a double room: incredible price! Since the hotel was empty, the owners let us stay in the luxury "piano" room which was very spacey. Great view to the lake, nice balcony for summer time, tv, internet connection, table, 2 couches, fridge, air-conditioning and the piano! Very central location in the old town. The room is very clean, there are all the bathroom facilities you need. The only thing I do not have much information about is the breakfast because we did not ask for it. Besides, the owners are a very lovely and friendly couple who live in the apartment next door. This was the best stay we had so far!

“Piano room with a view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2009

Great, small hotel in the old city. The "piano room" is lovely, overlooking tile rooftops, beautiful Lake Ohrid and the surrounding mountains, and has a balcony with table and chairs, which would be lovely in the warm months. The gracious, helpful hosts live next door and were very available, including giving us a local spa recommendation and arranging a taxi. Very comfortable room with ample space for lounging, reading, gazing at the lake... Eat trout in Ohrid!
