Having stayed at Hotel Granit five times in the past three years, I've had the chance to assess this hotel throughout the summer and autumn seasons. Although it lacks the period charms of those hotels which are located in the old town, it also benefits from a particularly quiet location outside of the centre of Ohrid. This is very welcome during the main summer season when the old town can get very noisy and crowded. As more international visitors head for Ohrid, demand for good quality accommodation is rising steadily.
Granit has some very comfortable suites (up to and including the presidential apartment - which I sampled for two nights in 2009), and the junior suites are particularly good value, particularly if you have two people sharing a twin at the end of the summer season. Premium rooms tend to have a lake view, which is usually stunning, no matter how many times you've visited Ohrid. Although there is free wireless internet, it can be a weak signal at times. However, it is usually excellent in the lobby area.
Service is always very welcoming and friendly (although some of the non-front of house staff don't speak much English) and the quality of breakfasts has definitely improved over the past three years. However, it still pays to be earlier, rather than later as once the breakfast offerings have gone, not much is replaced. During the latest visit at the end of August 2010, the innovation of a chilled fresh fruit trolley was very welcome.
Overall, the quality of accommodation is very good, the location - including the use of a private shingle beach - is ideal, but you would need your own transport to explore the wider area. However, for days or nights out in the old town taxis are reasonably priced for the ten minute journey.
