I can't say enough good things about my time at Mark's Place. Mark is a kind and generous host who has put an amazing amount of effort into making each bungalow unique and special. There is a great community vibe on the property, and if you are in the mood to be social, the type of people his property attracts are lovely and fun to be around. If I am ever in Moorea again I will most certainly be staying there again.

If you're on a budget, the only thing Marks Place lacks is an apostrophe. Otherwise, it is well equipped with everything you need for your vacation on Moorea, including rental bikes, kayaks, and kitchens. Mark knows the area well and is happy to show you where to find various local attractions such as beaches and hiking trails. The buildings are intelligently designed and well built—this is the only backpackers' I've found where doors neither jam nor rattle; window screens are intact,knives sharp and the shower's flow is strong and even. Mark no longer has a campground, which is understandable given Moorea's tendency toward heavy rain and bugs; many early, unfavorable reviews of the place are from campers. The grounds of Marks Place are kept neat, with few places for mosquitoes to breed; the place is far from the road and fairly peaceful, so kids can play freely with no worries about cars.
Be aware that if you're going to stay here, you will have animal company. Dogs and cats roam the property freely and will come into your bungalow if you let them. They're all pet-quality animals, tame and clean, but don't stay here if you hate animals or are allergic to them. I love cats and tolerate dogs, so for me this is a plus and not a minus. I would definitely stay here again and urge others to do the same.

Spouse and I just spent 11 days at Mark's Place. Had a great stay and enjoyed Mark and all he has to offer. Especially appreciated his advice on the best snorkeling beaches and local good restaurants. He also offered nice bikes and snorkel equipment that we found to be very adequate. We didn't try his kayaks, but they looked good.

To us, Mark himself was a nice friendly guy doing it, making it, on his own. He has built his place on his own, from scratch. He seems to keep a close eye on his place. Who could blame him. It's nice. He started with tenting and now has a half a dozen "nicely different" bungalows well spaced so all have some privacy and an outdoor setting too. We liked this aspect a lot; a tiled out door table area was very nice.

It may not be on the beach, but if that doesn't always matter, at the price/quality offered here you really must try his accommodations. You will like them...

My brother and I stayed at Mark's place in March of 2009 for a week. Because the original cabin he alloted for us was having a technical issue, he upgraded us to a larger cabin for the same price. We thought the location was great and if you wanted a faster way to get places, we simply rented a car, a scooter, bicycles.....actually, I think we did all three!! The cabins were well built and had everything one needed (and then some!). Mark himself was very accomodating. However, when he tells you its a short "hike" to the top of the mountain, its a little longer than that! We went relatively unprepared (only with our water bottles and a very small bag of trail mix), and the hike took the better part of the day!! Oh, and make sure you check out the Garden Shower - perfect for washing the sea salt off of you and your bathing suit!
At any rate, we'd definately stay at Mark's place again!
